Gilda would be kind of freaking cool, wouldn't it?

I will lose my mind (in the best way) if Gilda is released by the CC.

There were a lot of problems, let's just say that. Quite sad.

By all accounts she was a very kind person. She obviously had incredible talent and beauty. But she was troubled.

Keith Gordon (Dressed to Kill) puts out a rather nice list of his top ten Criterion titles (with a bit of cheating). What's interesting is that he also discusses home video formats (apparently he still keeps his LD player for Criterion's release of 2001).

For my money, this is still the sexiest scene in cinema.

The region free Italian Blu-ray of Gilda that I own looks great, but I'd double-dip in a second for Criterion.
It's a scorcher for sure!
A couple of others:
Ava Gardner sitting on a bed in The Killers. She doesn't really do anything but she's so damn sexy doing nothing!
Our introduction to a very young Marilyn Monroe in The Asphalt Jungle. Just seeing her waking up and that look she gives "Uncle Lon"........ some sweet kid.

What does everyone think of Eating Raoul? First blind buy of a Criterion release that I have mixed feelings about. I just finished watching it and without getting too into it... it was just okay.

Finally feeling underwhelmed by a Criterion release... doesn't feel good fellas.

I was very underwhelmed by Eating Raoul as well. Even by 80s standards - and maybe even especially by 80s standards - its choice of satirical targets seemed very safe, the performances were all adequate at best and the script just wasn't very funny.

Maybe I'll watch it again a few years from now and think it's extremely bold and clever but I kind of doubt it.

I will say one thing in defense of Eating Raoul though: it's major point was pretty spot on. Its protagonists were repulsed by sexual licentiousness but weren't nearly as repulsed by extreme violence. In fact, they were pretty okay with violence. Not too many people were taking shots at that particular quirk in the American character back in the early 80s. Larry Flynt was kind of a voice in the wilderness when it came to mocking that kind of hypocrisy.

So credit where credit is due on that score, at least.

I absolutely love Eating Raoul. I find it hilarious; the dry humor, black comedy of it all is something I find very interesting and very funny. What Paul and Mary come up with is such an outlandish idea, and the ridiculousness is infectious. It's a fun twist on Sweeney Todd, I think.

I don't particularly like comedies. Anything with Melissa McCarthy is something I stay away from just because broad, modern comedy is pretty unfunny unless its performed by certain comedians that I absolutely love (such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler; though, I still haven't seen Baby Mama). Gimme old school comedy (Chaplin especially) or black comedy, such as Eating Raoul.

Plus, the disc has a great commentary and some pretty good other bonus features, too.

Not really Criterion related, but yet a little Criterion related:

In the FWIW department ...

Despite finding it humorous, I couldn't shake the overall feeling of mediocrity.

Gilda would be great. I wonder if Criterion has the huevos to release Pickup on South Street at the same time. The recent Eureka/MoC release looks fantastic and this film deserves a domestic release soon.

Gilda would be a very interesting acquisition for Criterion. I can't help but wonder why Sony didn't release this last year in all territories instead of just some, and if it were to come out stateside via CC if they will just be using the UCLA source and tinkering with it. The only real downside to the current blu is it has virtually no extras, which a film like this should not be the case. That would be the real reason I'd double dip if it's true.

any other opinions out there on My Beautiful Laundrette? I'm not expecting a masterpiece, but I kinda feel like this film might resonate with me more than it has with some
