She had a lot of serious problems with drinking which were exacerbated by undiagnosed early onset Alzheimer's. She would just explode over the smallest thing, stuff like that. When her brothers died within a very small window of time, her drinking very much accelerated.
There were a lot of problems, let's just say that. Quite sad. By all accounts she was a very kind person. She obviously had incredible talent and beauty. But she was troubled. |

Keith Gordon (Dressed to Kill) puts out a rather nice list of his top ten Criterion titles (with a bit of cheating). What's interesting is that he also discusses home video formats (apparently he still keeps his LD player for Criterion's release of 2001).

What does everyone think of Eating Raoul? First blind buy of a Criterion release that I have mixed feelings about. I just finished watching it and without getting too into it... it was just okay.
![]() Finally feeling underwhelmed by a Criterion release... doesn't feel good fellas. |

I was very underwhelmed by Eating Raoul as well. Even by 80s standards - and maybe even especially by 80s standards - its choice of satirical targets seemed very safe, the performances were all adequate at best and the script just wasn't very funny.
Maybe I'll watch it again a few years from now and think it's extremely bold and clever but I kind of doubt it. |

I will say one thing in defense of Eating Raoul though: it's major point was pretty spot on. Its protagonists were repulsed by sexual licentiousness but weren't nearly as repulsed by extreme violence. In fact, they were pretty okay with violence. Not too many people were taking shots at that particular quirk in the American character back in the early 80s. Larry Flynt was kind of a voice in the wilderness when it came to mocking that kind of hypocrisy.
So credit where credit is due on that score, at least. |

I don't particularly like comedies. Anything with Melissa McCarthy is something I stay away from just because broad, modern comedy is pretty unfunny unless its performed by certain comedians that I absolutely love (such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler; though, I still haven't seen Baby Mama). Gimme old school comedy (Chaplin especially) or black comedy, such as Eating Raoul. Plus, the disc has a great commentary and some pretty good other bonus features, too. |

Gilda would be a very interesting acquisition for Criterion. I can't help but wonder why Sony didn't release this last year in all territories instead of just some, and if it were to come out stateside via CC if they will just be using the UCLA source and tinkering with it. The only real downside to the current blu is it has virtually no extras, which a film like this should not be the case. That would be the real reason I'd double dip if it's true.
