I figured "What the heck?" and made the purchase anyway.

I thought members in here might be interested since it is a good price.
Speaking of... they also have a bunch of BFI titles for £7.75

Still I think A Matter of Life and Death is indispensable to complement The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp as their technicolor masterworks, but unfortunately I don't think there's any official hint given right?
It's on my criterion.com most wanted list too. I agree with your assessment of all the other P&P films except The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. I need to watch that one again as it seemed too long the first time around.

I believe you are right about there not being any Criterion newsletter clues for A Matter of Life and Death. Fingers crossed that it will be a part of the upcoming usually jam packed New Year's letter.

Color problems from shrinkage and a push to blue so I don't think this was from the 2014 effort. Maybe someone who saw it on TCM can chime in.
The TCM HD airing of AMOLAD earlier this week looked spectacular to me. I think it must have been the recent 2014 restoration. Hopefully, Sony will let Criterion release it soon or release it themselves.

Just an FYI, the British release of Chariots of Fire has one scene different from the American version.

Let me guess...in the British release, the Brit won; in the American release, the American won.

Lol, not quite. In the American version a scene involving cricket was removed and replaced with a scene with a mild expletive, just to avoid a G rating. No joke.

I just noticed the remembrance for your sister in your signature. My condolences and prayers for your loss. A nice epitaph any film fan would be proud of.

That answers my question. Was just about to ask if Dr. Svet's review copy was damaged.

Default Nostalghia

not Criterion related, but Criterion related

anyone here fans of Andrey Tarkovsky's Nostalghia?

It is streaming on Netflix right now along with Tarkovsky’s last film, The Sacrifice. I started it the other night with the intention of getting a feel for what the film is like. I thought that maybe the film would perhaps be too impenetrable, but I was curious.

I think some of the points that Casey Broadwater, who reviewed Kino’s Blu-ray release of the film on this site, are spot on. He says about Tarkovsky’s filmography, “(his) films constitute a dense body of visual poetry that must be felt far before it can be articulated in words.” I think that is the key to this film, which is difficult, challenging, vague, but also quite beautiful. I’m fairly certain that I cannot describe in words what the meaning of the film is or what some of the symbolism represents. Scanning through what others have to say about it, I read two entirely different, yet both quite convincing, explanations of a key scene in the film. That reinforced the idea of what Casey says in his review.

See the film. Give yourself to it and let it mean whatever you feel it means. I can't say "I really enjoyed it" because it isn't exactly meant as entertainment. I can say, however, that it is a rewarding experience and a film that I'd definitely like to see again.

I absolutely love the film, and I own the Lorber Films blu-ray.

I thought that the film's message (or theme) was:

[Show spoiler]The ultimate value (or lack of value) of material possessions and the haunting power of memory.

Random lot of Criterions I received today from eBay primarily purchased for Straw Dogs...

I already have Fear and Loathing but I like the DVD clear slip and case much better than the standard blu. Fishing With John looks right up my alley with complete randomness.

Only for Criterion titles without blu releases. I've identified several titles that I want to add to my collection and then I'll upgrade if necessary.

Only Fishing with John doesn't have a blu-ray

But at least Straw Dogs comes with the supplements, of which none appears on the MGM release.
