TCM showed a bunch of David Lynch shorts last night. The ones off of the Eraserhead Blu-ray were first but they also showed the DumbLand shorts, and they all had the Janus logo before them.

Is it assumed that Criterion will be releasing these in some capacity? Either on their own disc or as the bonus features of ANOTHER Lynch movie?

Any more info on the Zatoichi box set going OOP? I have so many other Criterions that I want to pick up during the upcoming sale, but if it is going OOP, then I'll bite the bullet.

I think the rumors of this have suggested that it's not going OOP exactly, but that they'll be switching over to separate BD and DVD releases.

It's complicated. Kadokawa recently had a merger, and might be trying to retain some of the rights to its Daiei library internationally.

I'm more surprised that Criterion's Godzilla hasn't gone OOP yet, Toho is very strict about the international rights to that franchise.

They said that Lynch films -- plural -- would come, and I believe this was after Eraserhead was announced. I could see Lost Highway, Inland Empire, and maybe The Straight Story and The Elephant Man.

I must say I was a bit underwhelmed, I really like Last Year at Marienbad and Night and Fog and I did find a lot of stylistic similarities to them.

First I must say I really loved the opening sequence which last around 15 minutes or so, felt a lot like Night and Fog, also thought the musical score of the whole film was amazing.

But I really couldn't connect with most of what happens later, for example there is a great scene in the middle when the backstory of the main character is explained, but somehow I just didn't find it moving, I guess my problem is that it is mainly an exploration of Elle, there isn't much to say about the Japanese character, he doesn't really says much, it's hard to understand why he is in love with her to begin with, even the setting about the atomic bomb is analyzed from her point of view so we don't get to see how he relates to her past.

So maybe I went into with the wrong expectations but for me it doesn't work as a romantic story like for example Before Sunrise, I think the theme is more complicated than that.

I am still catching up with the special features, which is what I love about Criterion releases, you can always get more appreciation out of the films you didn't really get, and sometimes find info that can help you understand them better for your next watch, which is why am not dismissing this release just yet.
Hiroshima Mon Amour is not a film that I care to break down too deeply, as I think it possesses a poetic, visceral quality that should remain free from too much analysis.

But I will say that it says something very profound about the power of memory and loss and love. What exactly that is, I can't really put into words.

...in my eyes it's much more than a love story.

I see. If the previous post about perhaps splitting the release into blu-ray and dvd separately rather than the dual format is correct, then i may wait it out, but I guess its just in limbo at this point. Thanks for the info.

Oh I must've missed that. Beyond Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, I didn't know there were more to be expected. Very cool.

I can see DUMBLAND being as a supplement on INLAND EMPIRE in a way, with the former only predating the latter by a couple of years. It would be great if they were able to include RABBITS as well.

How many people here are fans of director Gus Van Sant?

I re-watched My Own Private Idaho a few nights ago and it was just absolutely flawless.

Then, last night I watched his newest film Promised Land and I really enjoyed it too.

Anyone have any Gus Van Sant favorite films?

My top 5 are:

1. Good Will Hunting
2. My Own Private Idaho
3. Drugstore Cowboy
4. Paranoid Park
5. Milk

(I haven't seen Mala Noche yet)

Criterion related in a way:

Dressed up as the Ghoul from CARNIVAL OF SOULS for Halloween, making me yearn even more for a hopeful blu-ray release.

Sad news. Fred Thompson, the former U.S. Senator who starred in films like The Hunt for Red October, In the Line of Fire, No Way Out, the 1991 remake of Cape Fear, and Days of Thunder, passed away today at the age of 73.

Here's a thread that I started in the proper forum.

For those region free, I just wanted to let you know that the UK Alain Robbe-Grillet: Six Films set is pretty cheap on Amazon.co.uk and base.com, around $40 shipped.

I've seen some recent talk about his films compared to Last Year on Marienbad so I decided to pull the trigger as they are too expensive on their own via Kino Redemption on the US.

It might be an impulse buy, but I find really great to be able to experience a director's work via a box set, especially when you haven't seen anything else by him, last time I had a great experience with the Cassavetes, Etaix and Demy sets, even if I didn't end up loving all of the films.

I still have the Herzog, Mizoguchi and Tati to go, but I just couldn't resist.

Just noticed that on the first page of this thread, the thumbnail for My Own Private Idaho is missing. Also, no review at all for Vernon, Florida/Gates of Heaven.
