Somebody give me just one logical reason why Criterion shouldn't do it.

Just ONE.

...it can't be done.

Jon Mulvaney doesn't have the balls to meet with me face to face.

...not after all the raging emails I've sent him about Le Samourai.

I watched Pather Panchali last night (I had seen bits and pieces, particularly the ending, about 2-3 times from film classes in the past).

Tonight I finished it up with Aparajito and Apur Sansar.

Wow, that's going to be some haul.

Day for Night, Fanny and Alexander, and John Cassavetes: Five Films are all great releases.

I've been saving it for a special occasion and decided that tonight would be the night. In honor of Gene Tierney's 95th birthday, I finally opened my cherished blu-ray copy of Night and the City and watched both the American and British cuts. What a wonderful experience, and on so many different levels!

Of course, I've seen the American version many times in the past ... but never looking this gorgeous. Both the picture and sound quality are absolutely splendid; in some ways, it was like seeing the film for the first time. I had forgotten that this was one of Fox's handful of productions in which they eliminated the famous Fox fanfare and instead played the initial bars of the musical soundtrack over the company logo.

That honor was not accorded the British cut of the film, which I saw for the first time tonight. I very much enjoyed it, both for its artistic merits and for the additional footage that was accorded Miss Tierney. Although I probably prefer the American cut overall, Miss Tierney's performance was much better served in the English release, not only because her acting was superior in the alternate takes, but also because her character was better developed and edited. In point of fact, screening the two cuts back-to-back proved to be a fascinating object lesson in the various disciplines and arts that comprise filmmaking as a collaboration involving script, editing, cinematography, direction and scoring.

This has been an incredible year for Criterion, and there have been many notable releases, many of which I admittedly have not yet seen. Still, for me personally, Night and the City probably can not be topped ... it is literally the disc that I have fantasized about, but never thought would come to pass. Thank you, Criterion, and Happy Birthday, Gene Tierney.

I went the film noir / crime route with the three 20% coupons I got this week; THE KILLERS double feature, RIDE THE PINK HORSE, and DRESSED TO KILL. Watching RtPH ride now! So far, I really dig it.

I've never seen Night and the City, but it was one of the Criterions I was most looking to buying when the B&N sale finally started last week.

I still have a few unwatched ones from the July sale, but after I get done with them, I will watch it as soon as possible.

I got Ride the Pink Horse during the July sale and really enjoyed it when I watched it as well. They release a lot of good films obviously, but it's always great to come across hidden gems like that one.

It's always fascinating to see alternate versions of the same film. Some of my favorites are the 70mm/35mm versions of The Big Trail and The Bat Whispers or the technicolor/b&w editions of Doctor X or, like the example you gave, British and US prints of Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon. Plus, in the early years of sound, before dubbing became easier to do, how films would be filmed in different languages with different casts like Dracula or a lot of the Laurel & Hardy shorts.

Have you seen Ace In The Hole?
