Oh no. She was my favorite in No Regrets For Our Youth, The Idiot, Tokyo Story and Late Spring.

Interesting that she passed away in September, but the news stories are just breaking out now. She lived in seclusion away from media, so that might be the main reason.

I know I could get the StudioCanal copy for about $13, but that ship has already sailed. I've been bitten by the Criterion bug. The Third Man and Last Year at Marienbad are going to put a hurting on my wallet, but I'd rather bite the bullet now, because at some point, I have to believe the supply for these will dry up.
Keep a close watch on both ebay and the Criterion trading thread here at blu-ray.com. I've run into some excellent deals in both venues; you just have to be patient and determined!

I was in Kamakura a few years ago and there was something oddly comforting in knowing that she was there somewhere too. I'd like to go back someday, but I'm sure it will feel different as silly as that may sound.

I picked up her final film a few months ago. May have to give it a watch this weekend.

What do you think of the Sasha Guitry Eclipse set? How does he compare with Bernard, Renoir, Duvivier et al stylistically?

I've always thought Hara's performance in Repast is one of the finest in cinema history. She expresses the character incredibly subtly, through slight actions and reactions, focusing more on repression then oppression. Its truly magnificent.

Bosley Crowther begins his review of L'Avventura:
WATCHING "L'Avventura" ("The Adventure"), which came to the Beekman yesterday, is like trying to follow a showing of a picture at which several reels have got lost.
Just when it seems to be beginning to make a dramatic point or to develop a line of continuity that will crystallize into some sense, it will jump into a random situation that appears as if it might be due perhaps three reels later and never explain what has been omitted.
What do you think? Are there missing reels? Has Criterion/Janus ever commented? Will it take an Indiana Jones to find them, if they're missing?

Pretty close. I moved from Silverlake 5 minutes from the Americana to Glendale 5 or less minutes in the opposite direction.

I doubt it. Crowther is quite notorious from just not getting the new cinema of the late 50s and 60s. He was very old guard.

Are Picnic at Hanging Rock and Red River the only Blu-ray releases with accompanying novels ?

I wrote a novelette for Salo, but I don't know if that counts.

I'd love to see these Lynch films in the Criterion Collection. I particularly am fond of The Straight Story. Do you think there's a good chance of this happening?

Does Disney license out their films because The Straight Story is their film, correct?

The Japanese release is usually super cheap and Amazon.jp has the fastest shipping in the universe.

(And yes, I saw that iScottie specified Blu-ray releases, but I thought this worth noting.)

There's no way to know for sure without confirmation from Criterion of Lynch, but they did say more Lynch films. I highlighted that being plural because they said it after Eraserhead was announced. Lynch now has a great relationship with Criterion and he's a stickler for detail and quality, so I think he would put as much as he can.

Stvn makes a point about Disney. I'm not sure if there's a precedent.

I saw this thread on CF where there have been several Buena Vista titles on Criterion. However, I don't know that any of those are strong indications it could happen. Lots of OOPs and Wes Anderson titles.
