Yet he missed the error on Erserhead disc :P

Actually, he probably didn't. Since they were able to go back and easily "fix" the back screen, that means the original was correct, so it was probably an error that happened later after Lynch approved the master.

It's going to be either Inland Empire or Lost Highway that's next, for sure. I don't know about Blue Velvet, but it's also possible.

That probably wasn't him. I'd wager he didn't watch the film, and probably neither did De Palma. I know of someone who does freelance work to watch films for "Director Approved" editions and some have been Criterion. Probably people like Wes Anderson watch the films though. Maybe Lynch, but I think he's probably more involved with packaging, supplements, and yes, chapter stops.

Lynch twittered that he was doing the colour grading on the BLUE VELVET deleted scenes before the blu ray release so I presume he is pretty hands on?

You know what's fascinating? There was a time when David Lynch considered Criterion his worst enemy. I wonder if time was a real healer between them? I read all these strange stories of what David Lynch did in a Criterion board room once and how he hated them... and now they have a great relationship. I think its really a match made in Cinema heaven, because both have an eye for detail and perfection. It was meant to be.

I'd be curious to hear those stories.

Time can be a healer, but also the state of physical media has changed. I wonder if the studios are now as accommodating or care about detail and perfection. They care about keeping costs low and moving units, which is probably not on the same page as Lynch.

Needless to say, Criterion and Lynch are buds now and we are all better off for it.

What everybody think about this title?

I sampled it a bit of it (library DVD) and so far I liked it...
Compact Digipak looks nice...and it is highly acclaimed...
video quality is bad as per blu-ray.com review... is it that bad?

It's a good movie, but one watch was enough for me.

Regarding the video quality, is it Criterion's best? No, but I didn't find it to be half as bad as Pro-B made it out to be. Then again, I also don't find the video quality of Children of Paradise to be as atrocious as is reported.

It's also sad how nearly everyone from that golden age of Japanese cinema has gone and left us.

I agree with Scottie's take on the video quality, but disagree that it's a one-and-done. It's a wonderful film, pick it up!

This is awesome, silverlakephil. Thank you!

I'd read about the 4k remaster that was playing in select theaters across the U.S., but when I looked to see if that had been ported over to a new Blu-ray, I didn't find anything. For some reason, it slipped my mind that a U.K. version could be region free. I'll definitely be picking this up. Much appreciated!

What's the likelihood of Wild at Heart or Blue Velvet?

I just watched Ran and I loved it so much that I'm giving both Harakiri and Kagemusha second chances.

I spent over an hour looking for some things on how/why David Lynch had problems with Criterion in the past (in the 1990s), and here's a link I found from the Digital Bits. In the 1999 interview, Peter Becker mentions Lynch. (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/site_a...iterionpb.html ) ...quote is below:

Quote:
The biggest disappointment for all of us right now is Eraserhead, which is a title that we never announced. We were in year-long conversations with David Lynch. And it's one of these things where David Lynch is a very particular person. He has very peculiar ideas about how he wants to do things. And he doesn't want to be rushed to make up his mind. And he wants to do what he wants to do, in the way that he wants to do it. He doesn't want his privacy infringed, and he doesn't want to be reading about himself. We were in very protective conversations with him about Eraserhead that were all positive, over a long period of time. Suddenly, there's a rumor on the web that we were actually doing it, and had announced it. At some point, I even saw street dates posted for it. You know, this is something that never even made it on to our actual production load. It had been, at one point, penciled into a schedule -- if we could finish up negotiations in time. But that's as close as it ever come. We had certainly never announced anything about it. That's upsetting.

Here's a great interview and in it, David Lynch reveals some interesting things about how Eraserhead was handled by AFI's Frank Daniel (whom David Lynch really admired actually, as his teacher back in the 1970s): https://www.criterion.com/current/po...elf-eraserhead

How often can you use the coupon from B&N? Like could I use online and again at the store?

I appreciate the heads up. I first started buying Criterion Blus from that discussion about three weeks ago. I grabbed my first OOP Blu, Army of Shadows, and Sweet Smell of Success in my first transaction. I then added Tess, Vivre Sa Vie, Summer Interlude, Paths of Glory and Days of Heaven in another.

I have about another 50 Criterion films that I want to add immediately, some of which I'm buying tonight and tomorrow from B&N. Once I have these in, I'll likely post a want list in that discussion. I also have a lot of movies I want to buy that aren't part of the CC-Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Misfits, White Heat, King Kong (1933), How Green Was My Valley, Laura, An Affair to Remember, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Sabrina, My Fair Lady, Cavalcade, Suspicion, Mutiny on the Bounty, North By Northwest, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Wings, It's a Wonderful Life, Out of the Past, Murder, My Sweet, Metropolis, Mrs. Miniver. So, I'm trying to balance everything out, while not going too crazy at any one time.

Wow with the recent talk about John Waters seems you guys invoked him, looks like he just was at Criterion offices, maybe one of your the titles you talked about might actually come out by CC.

Edit: I see Polyester and Pink Flamingos were released on LD, seems they are rereleasing a lot of those old spines.
