Watched Night and the City tonight. Fabulous movie. Pitch perfect fatalistic noir style yarn. BTW, anyone ever notice how much Widmark's voice changed in his later years? I was really taken aback by how differently his voice sounded relative to his later roles. Maybe that is just me...

As much as I loved The Apu Trilogy, I'm going to go with Night and the City as my favorite Criterion Blu-ray release of 2015.

Richard Widmark's voice does sound different in this film than it did even in his late 1950s films (The Trap, Two Rode Together, etc.).

I liked Pather the best because it was a little more raw as far as style and emotionally. There have only been about 10 films I have ever given a 10/10 and it is in that group.

The last two were equally wonderful, but I consider them 9/10. Not because of the story or way Ray made the films, but it's hard to top that innocence of Apu in the first film.

I talked the Trilogy up quite a bit to a family member leading up to Thanksgiving. He knew I watched them last week and asked today about my movies halfway snickering. I told him top 10 of all time for me. When he found out Bourne Trilogy wasn't even in my top 50 I lost all credibility with him.

Hah! I picked it up at Big Lots for $3 about a month ago. I don't know if I paid enough for it to appease the Criterion Gods, though.

Not that I'm aware of, and frankly I hope they never do. I've already spent more than enough on their Blu-rays.

Big surprise given that Night and the City is a noir film...

Seriously though, maybe I'll agree whenever I finally watch my copy of it.

No doubt. It makes me wish I was buying Criterions from the very beginning, but unfortunately I started only 4 years ago.

Aside from their selection of titles, yes. I think RAN was supposed to be in that first batch before they lost the rights.

It'll be interesting to see how much the audio has improved. For some reason I think people bite their tongues with Welles' films that feature unintelligible audio. I've seen Chimes on video and in 35 mm and the audio in each case was unacceptable.

It's not great on the recent UK Blu-ray either. I can't see the Criterion being any better, as it seems to be inherent to the production, but at least this will have subs.

I opened my copy of Walkabout that I bought from Barnes & Noble's 50% sale and the disc had the bronze discoloration and wouldn't play for me. Does anyone know if the replacement program is still in place and how long it takes?

A glimmer of hope in this article that hasn't been mentioned:

Quote:
Lee Kline and Phoebe Harmon provide a behind-the-scenes look at upcoming releases A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991) and The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962), which screens on Saturday. (program approx. 90 mins.)
Please be soon. I've been waiting too long.

I'm hoping they do. I have yet to send in my 2 movies that are discolored (Walkabout and Summer Hours).

I was just about to email JMulvaney regarding some replacement packaging for damaged goods in the mail, and purchasing plastic cases for The Leopard and Foreign Correspondent.

Mailed my Brazil Blu-ray cover to the LA venue where Terry Gilliam stopped on his book tour on October 19th. Since it's now December and I hadn't heard back I kind of figured it was lost or had been thrown out but there was a tiny part of me hoping that maybe any mail had just been collected and taken back to the UK with him.

Yesterday I got this back from the UK:

Is Criterion doing only digipaks now? Or is is just coincidence that the last three movies I bought (Moonrise Kingdom, Mulholland Drive, Don't Look Back) are all digipaks?
