These are both good problems to have, no?

Just finished watching back to back nights of Luis Buñuel.

Last night was Simon of the Desert.

Tonight was Belle de Jour.

Incredible filmmaker.

I did not realize that Belle de Jour was considered one of the greatest Feminist films of all time. I learned so much about feminine masochism too. I had low expectations going into watching this film. I was recommended this film by the people in this forum, saying my film library would never be complete without this movie. You guys were right. This is an essential film to watch and own. The 17 minute supplement of activist Susie Bright and film scholar Linda Williams was illuminating and enlightening too. Amazing. I finally am rediscovering Buñuel and it is long overdue.

I own the out of print The Milky Way and might make it a trifecta tomorrow night (having not see this film in at least 3 or 4 years).

For an artist as prolific as Bunuel, it is unfortunate that many of his films have not transferred to blu-ray. I am still waiting for

Los Olvidados
The Exterminating Angel
El
Viridiana
Land Without Bread

just to name a few.

I'm glad that you appreciated and enjoyed Belle de Jour. I don't remember exactly when I saw it first, but it was decades ago. And it had a powerful impact on me then, and that impact has continued and morphed ever since. Of course, as I've said many times here, I'm a very devoted fan of Catherine Deneuve; I may have a bit of bias here.

I also agree that the supplement is excellent. The whole presentation is excellent, really.

The Brood is awful and not scary in the slightest.

If you haven't already, make sure to watch Tristana, another great film from Bunuel-Deneuve (also including the great Fernando Rey) and a terrific companion piece to Belle de Jour. Cohen Media put out a fantastic blu-ray of it LINK.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I have seen it, but eons ago. I definitely need to revisit it, and I was looking for something to watch this morning.

I don't agree with it being a feminist film. I enjoy the film too much.

That Obscure Object of Desire is probably my favorite Buñuel behind Belle de Jour. It's absolutely hilarious, yet there's a great irony and cultural critique to the entire film.

I also really like Viridiana, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and Tristana. In contrast, L'Age d'Or didn't do much for me despite some interesting visuals and concepts.

Finally, let's not forget that Un chien andalou is one of the greatest shorts and perhaps the best surreal film to ever be made.

As long as I enjoy all of the ones that were blind buys out of that, then sure. 28 of those unwatched ones are Criterions (25 are blind buys), so it should be interesting at the very least.

I just try to make it a rule to not re-watch anything until I don't have any unwatched movies, so it's been quite a while since I've watched some of my collection.

glad to hear you enjoyed this one. I, too, think it is very funny! also doesn't hurt that the two actresses playing Conchita are both insanely gorgeous.

I am not sure how "Belle de Jour" is a feminist film. I am sure they've talked and written about it, however.

Probably my favourite, too. Although for some reason I've never seen Belle de Jour, which I must rectify. I am also rather partial to Phantom of Liberty as it was the first Buñuel I ever saw. My patience paid off recently as I was able to pick up a mint Criterion DVD for $15 from an Amazon seller.

We need more Buñuel on Criterion BD.

Tonight, I took it upon myself to start organizing my Blu-ray collection, or, at least, putting it in some semblance of order.

This is easier said than done, because all of my Blu-rays are housed in plastic cases from Target, and it's not possible to put the movies in alphabetical order while still allowing space for upcoming purchases.

My first task was to separate the horror movies in my collection from the rest of my collection. All of the Criterion Collection horror titles were separated along with the other horror films, since I'd prefer to organize by loose category than by putting all of my Criterion titles together. A few Criterion titles that straddle the line between genres, such as The Vanishing and Repulsion, were placed in the horror section, because...well, they're eerie and often horrifying films. This task took a while, but all of my cases of horror movies are stacked neatly (sort of like the caretaker's family in The Shining) at the end of my closet.

I started my second task, separating the classic-era films noir in my collection from the rest of my collection, after finishing the horror flicks. This is a little easier, because I had a lot of my films noir grouped together already.

After horror and films noir will come the westerns, the 1980s comedies, the science fiction, samurai, etc.

All of my James Bond movies and all of my Alfred Hitchcock movies are already grouped together, fortunately. My Kurosawa movies are all scattered about, though, depending on when I purchased them. I'll remedy that at some point.

I prefer to arrange my blu-rays by spine color, because I think it looks better on the bookshelf.

...but your way is very interesting as well.

If there's one thing in this godforsaken world that this man needs to rectify, it's the fact that he still hasn't watched PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...it's disgraceful.

If you like THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE then THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN is another great adaptation of the same material.

Nothing like popping into this thread, and seeing all this Luis Buñuel talk.

One of all time greats. Belle de Jour, The Exterminating Angel, Viridiana, Diary of a Chambermaid, Simon of the Desert, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie are all some of my very favorites in the Collection. Here's hoping for some upgrades in 2016!
