I don't think any movie PQ should get a pass or higher rating because of their importance, if anything I would say the opposite applies, a more important film should pass more strict standards. |

By importance, I was referring to the restoration and what an important undertaking that was. You'll find that the second and third film are even better, with only occasional blemishes, and I highly recommend you watch the piece on the restoration on the third disc. Mostly, I would enjoy the films. That's what really set this version apart from others, because the times I watched them before, the poor condition of the print distracted me from enjoying the films. |

I am really looking forward to these films since it is a blind buy for me, but I have enjoyed everything else by Ray. I am certain I will not get distracted by the transfers as even if I may find small issues I have certainly watched and enjoyed films in much worse shape, and I am sure once I start watching them for the story and not just looking at the quality I will soon forget any problem, since I am not usually that strict about PQ. After watching that many old films one gets used to problems from the sources, it is only when I get to watch a newer digitally shot film that I get more amazed by how perfect those usually look. As much as I like the look of film, lately I don't care that much if a film is shot digitally, for example Hugo and The Martian look simply gorgeous, and I can't imagine those looking as good on film unless shot on 70mm or something like that. |

Just finished The Shop on Main Street. There are just no words. Most devastating movie and effective storytelling I've experienced in a long time.
Everyone needs to see this at least once. And it needs an upgrade. |

If the source they had to work with can't be restored into perfect condition, then it shouldn't be a 5/5 because it's not perfect. I'm not talking about out of focus shots or something like that, which is source related. I'm talking about scratches and such, colors faded, scenes that are noticeably out of place with the rest of the movie in terms of quality, etc. I've seen plenty of old movies that were worthy of being a 5/5. Something like Planet Terror where it is intentionally messed up is a different story.

[Show spoiler] That moment, that one moment, for me lifts the entire film to a higher level.

Shame on me for ever doubting the brilliance of The Killers. Grade A storytelling, folks.

How about that ending? It is quite a film. Even though it is technically Slovak, I consider it among the best of the Czech New Wave.

I just finished watching Brian De Palma's Blow Out. What a fantastic early 80s thriller. The reviews I read were spot on. I'm a big John Travolta fan, and I have to agree that he gives one of his finest performances here. This will be part of my next Criterion order.
