I talked to a manager and he reiterated the same thing. I decided to just get a money back.
Hmmm...I did an exchange once, one of Hitchcock movies came badly damaged, box-cutter injury & no damage to mailing envelop...In store, price was a few dollars more than what I paid online, I did not face any issue exchanging...

It cannot be corporate policy to have the same price within exchange window to actually exchange...

I had that happen a few years back. A different store was happy to oblige. (Though that different store no longer has a dedicated media area, and the other store's is maybe 1/2 to 1/3 the size of what it used to be.)

The only exceptions I've seen were for limited stock or clearance items, but that is clearly not the case here.
The manager even said to me that the Criterion sale happens twice a year so just wait a couple of months and I could get it at the sale price again. He had a smirk the whole time he was talking to me.

I don't have time nor money to waste on gas to drive around to different B&N stores in the hopes of exchanging a movie that was damaged in the mail. The process should be simple and straightforward and not Russian roulette.

The whole process has left a bad taste in my mouth. One of the cashiers at that particular location even refused to allow me to use a coupon with the sale during a earlier visit because the Criterions were already 50% off and so I was already getting a "good deal". That was never happened before the 3-4 years I have been participated in the sale at that store. I have always used only one coupon per transaction and only one transaction per visit. There is really no more reason for me to shop at B&N anymore.

Is there a Barnes and Noble 40% off Criterion sale coming soon?

...I don't know if I can wait until July to add to my Satyajit Ray collection.

I know you want to own them, but if you really can't wait you can see the following on Hulu HD:

The Big City
The Music Room
Charulata
The Holy Man
The Elephant God
The Home and the World
The Enemy of the People
The Stranger

Note that these 3 on bold are only on DVD from eclipse set:

and these in SD:

Devi
Three Daughters
Rabindranath Tagore (documentary)

I wouldn't recommend Hulu in SD as most stuff tend to look pretty low res, I think they have 3 different resolutions and one of their SD files are ok but most others don't.

Today I watched On The Waterfront. Really, really good movie. The dialog is on point! And the music, too!

Classic. Brando was one of the greatest actors who ever lived.

On the Waterfront was my gateway drug for Criterion. An American classic, with great performances by Brando, Steiger and Karl Malden.

Is The Third Man ever going to be released again by Criterion? I've got the studio canal release and I want the Criterion release, but I'm not paying the absurd prices that people are asking for the OOP Criterion version.

Yes, a 40% off blu-ray (+DVD may be, not just criterions) sale starting on 12/15. With 25% or 30% coupons it won't be too bad.

You should get the B&N membership...

Short answer: not anytime soon. Best advice: pick up the 2008 DVD Criterion release and the latest StudioCanal 4k release. That will give you the Criterion extras plus the best version PQ-wise of The Third Man. Or you could scour eBay and maybe catch a deal on a decent used copy. Good luck. It's a great film, maybe the best ever.

Default Nicholas Ray

Watched In a Lonely Place for the second time recently. I hope this film is given a great release on blu sometime soon. IALP has my favorite performance by Bogie, although I haven't seen a few of his fims (e.g. Passage to Marseille). Bogie's performance is dark and powerful and I was engaged by all of the actors and the atmosphere of the film for the entire run time. If Columbia/Sony was willing to let Criterion release Gilda on blu, hopefully they will give Criterion IALP or release it themselves soon. In a Lonely Place should be available on the WatchTCM app right now.

Also, I recommend Ray's Bigger than Life to those that haven't seen it yet. BTL has a great performance by James Mason and Nicholas Ray's view of life in the 1950s is quite avant garde for the time I think.

That was the first Brando film I've "seen." Well I saw Apocalypse Now, but he just rambles. You barely see him. I don't know. I feel like On The Waterfront is where I truly saw how amazing he is an actor.

Your next Brando assignment is A Streetcar Named Desire

This was my first Brando film after The Godfather where I saw him as a young man and realized why he was considered so great.

Recently watched Ray's Wind Across The Everglades. It's no masterpiece but it certainly has atmosphere and i really enjoyed it.

That's how I feel about Ministry of Fear, It's just a good enjoyable movie. Ray Milland is in great form.

Default Ozu Recommendations?

Somewhat embarrassed to say that Ozu is a director i have ignored over the years for no good reason. I recently watched Late Autumn and An Autumn Afternoon and loved both of them (Liked Late Autumn more than An Autumn Afternoon though both were lovely films.) I'd like to continue to make my way through the rest of his color films first (Yes i know i probably should have started with his earlier films and i know there are a number of reasons why i should have..the fact that some of the later films are remakes of his earlier films and contain character variations/recurring themes etc.)

Was thinking of buying Equinox Flower next then jumping head on into the silents and early films.
Would appreciate any suggestions by Ozu fans on the films i should take a look at next. Apart from Tokyo Story which i know is considered his masterpiece.

Ministry Of Fear has been on my "to buy" list for quite a while. Haven't seen it for years but am looking forward to picking it up on Blu Ray.
Speaking of Milland i still have to pick up X:The Man With X Ray Eyes too!

I had completely forgotten about The Godfather. That was the first. Apocalypse Now second. On The Waterfront third. It's because On The Waterfront left me in awe. He was amazing! Thanks for the recommendation. That'll be my fourth.

Chances are very slim they will. Id just stick with the SC version. I had the CC version that I paid $100 for on ebay & was able to resell it after watching it for a bit more then I paid for it so if you do get it & change your mind it holds its value really well.
