I have dealt with this seller before, and his Criterion movies are legit. If the movie in question was not out of print, I would try the Amazon route.

Only Third Man and Bottle Rocket so far.
Ironically, I had bought a copy of Bottle Rocket in the digipack and only opened it today to make sure everything was OK. I visited my local B & N to find out that after MONTHS of nothinhg but digipacks, they had finally gotten a plastic case version in...figures!

I wonder if they would let me exchange for the plastic case?

Beta,
Just wanted to let you know that I didn't come across any blu-ray copies of "The Red Shoes" today, so hopefully someone else will step up and help you. If not, ban them from the forum.

Probably 99% of the people who respond to this question will say Studio Canal because it's blu. I went with the Criterion DVD and I have no regrets. It's a fantastic movie.

It's one of the five films that Criterion did not release on their main line or Eclipse but only on their Essential Arthouse.
Ordered "Kapo" today along with "Secret of the Grain". Kapo looks like a very interesting movie. Thanks.

I like "Throne of Blood" a lot. And I thought "Ran" would be just as enjoyable. I have seen parts of "Ran," but not all the way through. I don't care about having the Blu-ray just to have. I want the best quality available. I know many have seen or own both releases, and I am curious what some of the regs in the thread think. Ultimately, the decision is mine to make, but a lot of you gents are more experienced with technical transfer idiosyncrasies than me.

Thanks for the reply. I can get a new Criterion copy for $35.00

By the way, I was just on the B&N site. If you click on the "Red Shoes" DVD listing, you can then click on the other formats (Blu-ray) selections.

http://video.barnesandnoble.com/DVD/...5059312/?pwb=2

So, for those who haven't ordered yet, it looks like you can still get it from B&N.

watched "Magnificent Obsession" earlier tonight.
WOW!
gotta be one of the craziest movies I've ever seen.
I love Sirk; his films are so amazing.
I would have loved for someone like lauren bacall of katherine Hepburn to have been in the lead role, but the movie had some of the wildest twists and turns I've ever seen.
anyone that hasn't seen this one should give it a rent.
Sirk's films are definitely very different from almost anything else in the entire collection imo and
hopefully at least "Written On the Wind" will get released on blu-ray one day.
such a great movie.

Random Question: I know last year during or close to the time of the Barnes and Noble sale Amazon.com was having a similar sale (50% off). Does anyone know if or when this will happen?

The only reason I ask is because I was looking at the B&N website and they ship with UPS, and I would prefer NOT to get metaphorically raped by their crazy handling/brokerage fees

I'm sorry for intruding into this thread as I am not a regular poster on Criterion titles but I noticed Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant's Charade is coming out on BD from Criterion? Are there more titles from Grant or Hepburn that will be out?!!!!!!!

that's the only one so far.
Grant is represented by North By Northwest on Warner--
his only other film that is out on bd.
Hepburn has no films on bd at present.

Well, I watched Salo/120 days of sodom, today. Wow!!!

Where to start...first, I must say that my 20 year old counterpart would have considered that to be one of the coolest movies ever made. My 32 year old self is a bit more reserved.

It wasn't a bad film by any means. In fact it was a lot better than what I had expected. I figured it's enduring populatiry relied heavily on it's graphic depections of depravity, rather than actually being interesting. It was actually quite interesting to me. One thing I found odd, even with all of the nudity and sex in the film, I did not find it to be erotic at all. It was almost as if you are watching from a far distance and you are a bit "detached" from what is going on. In fact, that could be very intentional as it may also be the films saving grace. With some things that happen, you NEED to feel detached enough to allow yourself to sit through watching it...I hope that makses sense.

Is it worth a purchase? 12 years ago I would have bought this movie before I got past the first 15 mins. Now....perhaps in the future as a conversation peice and curiosity film for those friends who would be interested in seeing it. If someone described it to me, I would certainly want to see it...I am just debating on how OFTEN I would.

Thanks for reading.
-Dave

P.S. Silly question here. Is the title of this film pronounced SAL-OH or SAY-LOW?

Yay, our numbers are growing! haha I completely agree with you about the "non-eroticness" of it. I've mentioned it before, but whereas many current films revel in or sensationalize it's violence/sex/gore/etc., Salo comes across very blunt and more a "these are terrible things you are viewing" sort of idea. I was pleased that having recently watched "In the Realm of the Senses", that it came across the same way. Not so much the "terrible" things, although there are some, but that sense of, not sure how to word it, "presentation over eroticism" perhaps? In regards to the name, I've personally always said "sah-low", but I could be completely wrong.

1 more question regarding Charade. I understand the film is under public domain. If so, how can Criterion release the Blu-ray?

Does this mean that Criterion can release other films that are in the public domain on BD?

First, let me say that I own Showgirls on blu-ray so I'm there with you, but I just didn't get it. It took me 3 days of starting and stopping to finish it. I literally turned it off so I could watch Jumper (seriously). The only reason I watched it was to say I watched it. It certainly is a novelty film.

They can probably release anything they want to in the public domain, the trick is to get a print that is worthy of release. Criterion goes back to the source (Universal) and pays them to use their original materials.

Sounds like my kind of movie but I'll probably wait till it's not about $25 shipped.

I like Ran a lot. But I've only seen the dvd (and the film when it first came out). I thought the dvd was just a fair to middling transfer, thinking how much better it could look on a blu-ray done right (not saying I remember precisely what the film looked like back when it came out though).

Seems to be the general mindset is that the blu-ray sorta kinda looks like the 35mm prints that are circulating these days, with some dnr/ee added to the mix, so barring a complete restoration, that's about the best it's going to look for quite some time (unless they decide to do a non-dnr/ee-ed version which I wouldn't bet on ever happening). And also the blu-ray looks better than the dvd, but by how much, I couldn't say at this point, and opinions seem to vary somewhat.

So, Criterion for the supplements and an okay dvd transfer (nothing to write home about); the blu-ray to get at least a bit better of a picture, unsure what supplements it offers.
