Sure, you could do that. But it would be meaningless. Seriously, what if one did that, and discovered that a title went OOP once every two years. When that next two year period is up, are you just going to sit there wondering and fretting about which title will be going OOP? What if nothing does?

Just watched Don't Look Back, and I was a bit surprised with Bob Dylan attitude on the whole.
While I don't really know much of the guy, I just like some of his songs that I discovered after the use of his song The Times, They Are A-Changing on that great opening montage in Watchmen. I just imagined him different, I guess it could be a combination of many factors, like being followed by a camera crew, his young age and ascension to fame, but was still a bit bothered by how in one particular scene plays like he doesn't know anything and at the same time lectures a guy on how he knows all about his job at the Time's magazine ![]() Anyway it was still fascinating to see all the parts with dialog, I didn't think the actual concert sections added much, I think his best performance on the movie is the one in the room on a reunion with some of his friends. |

Last night, I did see this amazing film starring Richard Gere called Time Out of Mind, which ironically is an album title from Bob Dylan (also ironically, the director Oren Moverman wrote the screenplay for the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There). But wow, Gere was amazing and its one of the best films I've ever seen on a homeless man in NYC. It's thoroughly immersive, engaging and absorbing. |

Just finished watching Phoenix on Netflix and have to agree with Scottie and SammyJankis about that ending! That ending was like a gut punch. I recommend it to everyone that has Netflix or try to find some way to watch this film. Nina Hoss was great in the lead role and I look forward to watching more films by Christian Petzold. Hopefully, the phoenix in the New Year's cartoon refers to this film or maybe it will end up being a double clue of some sort.

I've been meaning to check out "Phoenix". It looks phenomenal.
Not Criterion-related, but has anyone seen "The Big Short"? It's honestly one of the biggest piles of shit I've seen in quite some time. The first 3/4 of the movie play like a completely unfunny version of a Christopher Guest-style mockumentary. Then, the last 20 minutes get really serious and preachy. The performances were uniformly AWFUL and unconvincing. Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell's performances are played in the tone of daft caricatures, but it's supposed to be this serious film. It is so, so poorly directed by Will Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay. Dude clearly had no clue what he was doing with this material. As I was watching the movie, I honestly felt I was going crazy thinking about the notion of, "This is actually being called one of the best films of the year?" It blew my mind. I can't think of a recent film that is uniformly praised that is any worse. Maybe "American Hustle" or "Juno". I'm not one to put down others' taste in film, but I just can't comprehend how someone could think this is a good movie. |

I'm planning to bid on Clouzet's Diaboliques on ebay. Is the picture on the Criterion better than the one used on the Arrow disc? I read a review here saying it's pretty much the same, but on DVDBeaver is states that the Criterion edition has a better frame rate and is clearer.

Queen of Earth is excellent as well, it's an examination of a deteriorating mind and friendship. It's a shame IFC decided not to release a blu Ray of it, the 16mm cinematography grain probably looks pretty ugly while streaming. |
