Apparently nothing as good as whatever Ricky Nelson was smoking because he's the sleepiest looking fast gun I've ever seen. I know why they cast him in the movie but he's awful. Angie Dickinson has great legs but she's not much better, acting-wise, than Nelson. Walter Brennan is so over-the-top that it seems like he's auditioning for Blazing Saddles. I love westerns the way The Great Owl loves Noir but I've probably watched this film more times than any other trying to get it but it just doesn't work for me. I love Hawks, I love Wayne, I love westerns, but I don't like them in this western.

One of these days I need to watch Rio Bravo with the commentary on because I pretty much agree with everything you just said. People whom I respect think very highly of it and many list it among the ten best westerns, some near the top. To me it just seems like boiler-plate entertainment meant to please everyone. You have John Wayne for the men, Dean Martin for the ladies, Ricky Nelson for the kids, Angie Dickenson because you need to have a love interest, and Walter Brennan for dad-gummit comic relief. It's entertaining, but the transparency of the casting keeps it from being great. The worst offender here is Ricky Nelson -- I keep expecting to see his gun belt pull down his pants. He's like a little kid playing dress-up.

I personally prefer El Dorado. It's basically the same story, but with better actors.

Oh and talking of westerns: Shane, that is one were I couldn't get past the acting, I don't remember the acting being bad on Rio Bravo, although that doesn't stop me from loving The Night of the Hunter.

But there are worse of course I tried to list only the ones that have mostly favorable ratings.

The kid in Shane has to be the most annoying character in movie history.

One reason why I'm such a big fan of Rio Bravo is that I grew up watching John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, which was heavily inspired by Rio Bravo.

I love everything about Rio Bravo. It's not as cerebral and multilayered as The Searchers, but the characters are all engaging and infinitely likable.

It helps that I'm a big fan of Angie Dickinson, of course.

Thank you! You're right, Nelson was cast because teenagers were now making up a significant portion of the movie going public and Wayne wasn't pulling them in so guys like Nelson and Fabian were being cast in these films for the girls and starlets of the month for the guys.
I just find the film not funny enough to be a parody but too unintentionally funny to be take seriously.

The Cronenberg "Crash" or the best picture winner "Crash"? Ah, I see you clarified above. I love "Crash". It's very unpleasant, but it's brilliant in a lot of ways. And the scene when James Spader is in bed with his wife and she's asking him if he'd like to suck on another man's penis and he just keeps moaning is one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes of all-time. I was falling off my couch laughing at that scene.

A movie I despise is "Juno". I saw it in the theaters and really, really hated it. Watched it about three years later on HBO just to see if my reaction would be as strong. That movie (the writing, the characters, the twee hipsterism) made me want to punch the television.

I have a buddy who hates "Juno" as well, and he saw "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" and said that he may have a film that has replaced "Juno" for twee insufferability. I don't think I can handle watching that one.

Only films I give a score of 0/30 to. There's a few others I give a 1/30 to (which rounds to 0/10 on a ten-point scale) but those two are the only to get a true zero. I suspect Jack and Jill would make the list as well but I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole.

Yeah it's been ages since I saw it, and I am pretty sure I was too young to watch Crash (1996), funny enough and now that The Great Owl mentions it, I do like the Oscar winner Crash (2004) .

I really liked Me and Earl and the Dying Girl but you really shouldn't trust my tastes, I do like Juno, and more importantly I really liked The Big Short a lot, which I believe you really hated with passion , not only that I think it was better than Spotlight which I also enjoyed.

Easy. And on-topic for this forum: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

If Criterion started to release shows, which ones would you like to see? I'm pretty curious to see what everyone else thinks

Same here. I can't think of a film I out and out hate. I generally can find something to like in just about every film. Example: Rio Bravo-Dimitri Tiomkin's score.

Absolutely shocked by some of these hated films...

Almost would think you're all just 'Jeffery Wells-ing' the board with ridiculous statements

If we're talking about movies you hate but everyone else seems to like, I'd have to go with the Searchers. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
A movie I love BECAUSE of how bad it is is The Room. Definitely one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Respectfully disagree. Although ironically, I can see how one might consider Bobby Henrey's performance affected.
