The Sacrifice is mind numbingly boring. Rio Bravo however? What are you smokin?

To emphasize the importance of the proper cut of a film, I love Apocalypse Now, but I don't like the film at all when viewing the Redux cut.

I wouldn't say that the film is that bad, but I'm watching and waiting for some "big" revelatory moment where everything comes together and makes sense, but it never happens.

No need for Criterion treatment. However I do wish they (Criterion) would take a swing at it, if not for the change in the cover art, lol/ It's just the current BluRay cover art is so ridiculously out of sync with the movie.

Make it look like the movie is some RomCom with Eisenberg smirking as some kind of GenX nerd-hero whereas the original poster paints him as a more complex character

I don't have the Sony set but it would be interesting how Criterion would approach this project.
That is just a slipcover though, don't know other people but since it is a hassle to remove every time I just throw those up

The actual packaging with the movie is pretty cool, I mean the digipak that is like the Criterion ones.

I love Apocalypse Now, but I've never been huge on Apocalypse Now Redux.

I grew up watching Apocalypse Now, and I find it to be an endlessly rewatchable movie. When I saw Apocalypse Now Redux at the theater in 2001, however, that familiarity worked against me, because watching the way that the characters acted in certain Redux scenes was almost like watching a family member or a close friend do something really out of character. The chief example is the surfboard theft scene.

I will say this for Apocalypse Now Redux, though...
It features one of my all-time favorite nude scenes, thanks to Aurore Clément, who also starred in Paris, Texas.

Yeah I could see someone not liking The Sacrifice or Jules and Jim, but Rio Bravo? one thing is thinking is not as great as it's reputation but I don't see how someone could not enjoy Rio Bravo.

Edit: Now that I think about it, The Searchers is even more highly regarded and that is one I didn't like that much , but something tells me I just need to give it another try.

Not just films. I've tried reading War and Peace three times, all at different points in my life. I just...can't. As a rule, I love Russian lit, especially Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. But Tolstoy is such a long-winded mother, and trying to plow through that novel, though a classic, is like having a tooth pulled without Novocaine.

If somebody held a gun to a bunny's head, and said "Read it, or else", well, all I can say is....sorry, Bugs. "Kill the wabbit."

I am exactly the opposite. I have read War and Peace (twice ) and Anna Karenina, but just barely made it through Crime and Punishment (in fact, I may have bailed on it before the end...don't remember). Don't care for Dostoyevsky at all, but Tolstoy is sublime. I suppose it helps that I am a fan of Russian history and Tolstoy captures the drama and social milieu of the Napoleonic Era and 1812 so vividly through his characters that reading his work is one of the greatest pleasures in literature.

How about some news/rumors:
At the start of the newest episode of The Canon podcast, they mention that Criterion will be releasing Alexander Payne's Election.

And according to Criterion Cast, Criterion has Laurie Anderson's Heart of a Dog, which will be available from iTunes on March 1st.

I have that poster on my wall Or, close to it. It's the "You don't get to 500 million friends..." one.

He's my favourite living director, but I feel that Fincher is already pretty well represented on Blu-ray (minus Panic Room). Aside from the two that are actually in the collection, almost all his films have pretty much Criterion-caliber editions. Zodiac and Social Network in particular have excellent releases.

Any more (extraneous) Fincher in the collection will take away my chances of getting them to release Virgin Suicides!

I'm not a fan of Apocalypse Now, either. I also don't like the source material, Heart of Darkness, all that much.

I know what you mean. I happen to love Apocalypse Now but every now and then I'll come across a widely lauded classic film that, despite giving it a fair chance, just doesn't do anything for me.

And when I bring it up, I get the inevitable "oh, you just didn't get it".

That's weird if true, since the WB disc is still in print.

Alexander Payne is one modern director who has never disappointed me, so I hope that's true. Election is a hilarious movie.

I think he recorded something for Il Sorpasso, so he must have a good relationship w/ Criterion.
