I don't like Oscar or his statue but it's interesting to go back through time and see all of the nominations I've never heard of. A lot of the foreign ones never even made it to DVD, some never made it to VHS... That wouldn't be the case if the millionaires had made different choices, but since they made the choices they made everything else got lost in the dust.

Did your autocorrect really turn escapist into capeshit?

What kind of phone do you have. I want one.

Now I am confused, "capeshit" does mean something else although I had never heard the term before, I guess after Birdman winning the Oscar previous year it was too soon for a turnaround since in a way it bashes those type of films.

Heh, I (obviously) had no idea capeshit was actually a word.

I think I'm going to keep it that way for a while. I'll break down and google it eventually but right now I'm enjoying the air of mystery.

That's to start.

I saw Chantal Akerman included in tonight's Academy Award In Memoriam segment tonight. I really want to explore her filmography. To see the reverence people have for the lady, and her work, makes me really want to see what everybody is raving about. Jeanne Dielman is on Hulu, and I am going to watch it by next weekend.
I hope you enjoy "Jeanne Dielman ... ." The Criterion disc is one of the few I've ever rewatched, and the supplements are very good. I hope it makes it to Blu-ray and hope that the labels on things like a sack of potatoes and a milk bottle become llegible with the additional detail. Do you like Ozu? The stationary camera? The long takes? Do you like to watch people doing ordinary, mundane things? Then it's almost certain you'll like it. If you buy it, be sure to watch the movie before the supplements.

Default Hirokazu Koreeda

shout out to a film that I really enjoyed and one that has really stuck with me... that film is the graceful and beautiful Still Walking.

it doesn't seem like we are getting any new Koreeda on Blu-ray and that's really a shame. Maborosi and After Life are both included in the TSPDT top 2000 films list. neither is available on Blu-ray; their DVD releases are OOP and are fetching a premium price tag on eBay.

I had reservations about buying the UK releases of I Wish and Like Father, Like Son. some minor PQ issues, I guess...

anyway, I hadn't bought a new Blu-ray in about 6 weeks, so I treated myself today. also found a copy of Nobody Knows on DVD on eBay for $3.45 shipped. it is from eStocks, from whom I've never received a 'very good' disc that wasn't in 'like new' condition.

so all 3 for $28.07. happy.

Like Father, Like Son is one of the most underrated comedies of the 1980s.

...glad to see I'm not the only one here who appreciates it.

If you haven't seen I Wish and Like Father, Like Son, you are in for a treat since you liked Still Walking, they are all on the same level for me, I haven't seen Nobody Knows, but I too would like more of his films to come out, seems no one has picked Our Little Sister for release on US or UK sadly.

For those wondering, capeshit does refer to the constant onslaught of marvel/dc/YA/star wars movies based on super hero's that's defining this decade.

Edit: and to be fair, capeshit is like light beer. If fun when you're out with friends and you jus want to have fun but when you're alone, you're gonna want something finer. Now, if you go to the local water hole and all they have is light beer, well then, we have a problem.

Is there a general consensus on the best-looking black-and-white transfer in the Criterion collection?

I was watching The Seventh Seal last night and that one's pretty darn good, though I don't know if it's the best.

...Harakiri is another great one.

Hiroshima mon amour, Marketa Lazarova, and Persona quickly come to mind.

I recall Seven Samurai being close to perfect.

They have so many great looking B&W films to choose from that it would be difficult to choose the best. Anatomy of a Murder, Foreign Correspondent, The Innocents, Night and the City, On the Waterfront, and Rififi all come to mind as top of the line looking B&W releases.

I saw on the Blood Simple thread there's talks of a John Waters Criterion coming. I cannot wait if this is true. Apparently Multiple Maniacs was recently restored. It would be great to see that in a good quality rather than some shoddy YouTube video. Even better if its included as an extra to another one of his movies. Let's get Mondo Trasho in there while we're at it!

While there are many other good ones, the sharpness of The Seventh Seal is very impressive and I don't remember it having source issues, also I another I remember looking amazing specially for it's time of release was The Freshman, seems overall Bergman and Lloyd films are in pretty good shape.

Criterion has a lot of gorgeous black-and-white transfers. Two reference quality standouts that immediately come to mind are:

The Sweet Smell of Success (Just might be the best black and white transfer in the collection. Jaw dropping good. Every frame looks like a large format camera image you would see in an art gallery. New York City at night in the 1950s never looked so alive in black and white as it does here.)

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold (Unbelievable clarity, stunning, gorgeous, creamy whites, inky blacks, all shades in between. It looks so real, like you could walk right into your screen and enter a black and white world of cold war Berlin.)

I seem to recall Wings of Desire looking pretty darn good too, but it has been awhile since I last saw that one.

Not Criterion, but Out of the Past and Touch of Evil are also unbelievably rich and vibrant in black and white, with incredible detail.

Kinda sorta Criterion related....I also love the look of the new 4K restoration of The Third Man from Studio Canal.
