Pretty happy with my overpriced Criterion release.

I mean you can call it what you want new 4k scan or whatever, it's never going to look like say The Avengers. I don't care what you do to it.

You should have held onto your VHS copy if that's the case.

Since we were speaking of the 'good old days,' of video stores, now's not a bad time to relay my story about the first time I tried to see The Third Man. I rented the VHS from Blockbuster and couldn't make out a word of spoken dialogue. I was used to missing bits and chunks at a time, but this transfer was just despicable. Or maybe it was just the condition of the tape. Man, those were great times.

Out of curiosity, do you guys keep track of the movies you have seen?
I'm asking this because I've discovered many wonderful movies through Criterion but to be honest usually I know only one or two titles they release each month, whereas most of the people here seem to know/have seen a lot more... and that makes me think that i haven't watched as many movies as the "average user" has seen.
I started a list about 8-10 years ago including everything I could remember and to this day I have watched 863 movies in my life (about 200 of them were Criterion titles), so I just wanted to know 'how many movies' you guys have seen, if you keep track of things like that.
I also keep track of the movies I see by language, and as I am studying Italian language it surprises me to see that I watched over 100 Italian movies in the past two years (and at least 40 were from Criterion )

Note: I'm 25 years old, I think this is also an important factor in the calculation.

Yesterday I sent Criterion $10 via PayPal a replacement case for The Manchurian Candidate. I didn't realize the case was smashed on the back until I opened it. It didn't stop me from watching the film.

I am both a collector and a fan, and prefer to watch best presentation, so I own both. If I were to re-watch the film now, I'd definitely go with the StudioCanal, and recommend all Region B enabled cinephiles to get it, but the Criterion release still holds up. And the supplements are different. Both are worth owning, although not at the OOP eBay price unless you are hardcore.

That's where I buy mine. In fact just picked up 10 of them for possible future use at .85 each (as the singles usually go out of stock and they are gone for a long long time. But not a good option if you need just one as shipping is five times for than the case. :P

MSRP is $224.95 (keep in mind that it's a BD/DVD combo pack with 27 discs). Criterion's price in their own shop is usually 20% off, so $180.

jayembee beat me to this I bought the Zatoichi set during a Criterion flash sale for 50% off MSRP (~$112.49). I know that some members here got it for less than $100 at the Barnes and Noble sale in July or November. During the B&N sale it is 50% off MSRP plus some of the cashiers let you "stack" member coupons for an additional 20-40% off I believe.

The set is definitely worth the 50% off to me anyways. Hopefully, Criterion will restock their site and B&N within the next few weeks, so the prices on other sites like Amazon and eBay will become more reasonable.

I think age is a factor. In my 20s and early 30s I watched a lot more movies than I do now. It wasn't uncommon for me to watch 2 or 3 movies in a single night. Now, 3 movies is a good week for me; it sometimes takes me two nights to watch a 2 hour film, and there are some weeks I don't watch any. Life, y'know? Anyway, I haven't kept track of the movies I've seen. I'm just trying to keep my unwatched pile from getting taller than I am.
