Oh, you have seen only that of Malick?
Then you should give a chance to his previous films, they are much more "accessible".

Not sure though The New World should be the 2nd film you should see. Maybe you won't want to see others afterwards.

Releases like what we are seeing in July are disappointing to me considering the other titles that I'd actually buy like this one.

It definitely seems interesting for its world building - in the same way as a lot of what I found interesting about The Revenant is how it depicted early America as a vast, quite alien environment (although I don't find it flawless.) Even if I hate The New World I'm still going to give The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven a shot, no question about it.

The Carnival Of Souls announcement doesn't mention anything about the slightly longer director's cut that appeared on Disc 2 of the Criterion DVD. The PQ was pretty rough, so maybe they left it off this time.

Badlands needs to be included in there as well.

Days of Heaven is a good entry point for Malick. Watch it once then wait a week or two then revisit the film. I remember being so taken with the visuals the first time I saw it that the story felt detached. Subsequent viewings have always knocked me out. Linda Manz is the heart of the film. Those that love the film usually love her simple, plain-speak narration.

Me and my brother. It just used to be me and my brother. We used to do things together. We used to have fun. We used to go in the streets. There was people suffering of pain and hunger. Some people with tongues hanging out of their mouth.

Disagree. Night and Fog is historically significant enough that it deserves an individual release. I'd heard of Night and Fog before I knew of Resnais' name. 1960s cinema by Resnais and a documentary about the Holocaust are two different consumer bases - historians, educators, or those interested in learning about Nazi/Holocaust history in general - although of course there will be crossover.

What an outstanding month! Muriel is the highlight for me: it's a top ten of all timer for me, and I've been hoping for an upgrade for years (Masters Of Cinema announced but abandoned plans to upgrade it over three years ago). My only niggle is that they've not used the iconic Hans Hillmann poster for the cover art, an original of which hangs over my office desk.

The New World is dream-come-true territory too. Prior to Tree Of Life it was actually my favourite Malick movie, tho I've since reevaluated his entire body of work. I never expected such a lavish release of this here.

I just want to say thank you to everyone for doing such an outstanding job of using spoiler tags on all your posts when discussing the new pages prior to release announcement.

Those who wanted to be surprised were still able to visit the thread and not have Christmas ruined. Y'all were great!

It wouldn't make sense to stick these two films together in a random set either. They have little connection to one another, outside of the wider early Resnais themes of time and memory. It'd be an unwieldy two-pack for sure.

I think when I get The New World, I'll do a Criterion-Malick 4 day marathon in chronological order, since I have the other 3.
Although i'm not sure watching 4 films in a row of the same director is ideal.
I have never done it.

I'm disappointed that Criterion is releasing a different Muriel film. As an Australian Citizen, if you mention Muriel, everybody would think of Muriel's Wedding, not that Muriel!
I don't think I should really do this, but-

Joanie: You're terrible, Muriel.

I don't mean to change the subject, but I see that The In-Laws release will include the original film commentary - one of my favorites - Arkin, Falk, and Bergman (screenwriter who went on to direct The Fugitive). Sorry for my enthusiasm, but The In-Laws is one of my 5 favorite comedies of all time. Another was announced last month. Thank you Criterion

Fair enough. I was thinking about the debate about charging full price for a very short doc (though one with an even longer one included lol). So I figured a boxset would have been easier to swallow.

Great month! I haven't seen The New World yet, but that's a big release. Carnival of Souls is also a fantastic upgrade, as is Night and Fog.

I'm surprised and a bit bummed that Night and Fog is being sold with a $39.95 SRP though. It's definitely historical and worthy enough of a standalone release, as mentioned above, but I wish it had a lower price.

Also, since I haven't seen The New World yet, which cut is the best to see first?

I prefer the extended cut. I think it adds some nice scenes.

Hmm, they all seem pretty interesting. Out of the bunch, I've only seen Night and Fog; I think one viewing might be enough, though. I've been meaning to watch Carnival of Souls via Hulu soon, and I've just requested The New World from the library. I do really like Hiroshima mon amour, so I might have to check out Muriel if it's available from the library. I'm not sure if any of them are must-buys, but since the B&N sale will be going on, I may just have to get one or two of 'em.
