I'm just now seeing the July announcements.
I'm stoked about the upgrade of Carnival of Souls! I wish that they were keeping the same sexy cover art that was on the DVD, so I'll probably hold on to my DVD edition for that reason. Still, the idea of having a 4K restoration of this movie just blows me away. Great news! Pencil me in as well for The New World and Muriel, or The Time of Return (another movie with Delphine Seyrig...woo hoo!). I'm intrigued by A Touch of Zen and The In-Laws. |

Considering the month in question is July, I would say the lineup is a disappointing...Standing 3 months away, I don't see any must buy (A Touch of Zen would be my pick if I had choose one right now) for July B&N sale...but it may change...like always...

But you're right. Between Criterion blowing it off every other month and people moving from shaking the gifts under the tree to x-raying them there's really not much point to circling the 15th anymore. |

I'm Australian and if someone mentioned MURIEL I'd think they were talking about the Delphine Seyrig/Resnais film! It's been shown at the local Cinematheque at least twice over the last five years. |

My guess, King Hu? The remaining two cult favorites would be The In-Laws and Carnival of Souls. I'm not familiar at all with King Hu, so I'm maybe grasping straws here.

Finally getting my opportunity to post about my thoughts on the July releases. I am ecstatic about The New World! It's pretty much my favorite Malick film of all and its one of the few movies that uses Wagner's music to the best cinematography I've ever witnessed on celluloid. The story is riveting and there are a wide range of emotions I gain from watching this film. This release is a dream come true for me. It's a movie I tend to revisit once every year or two because I love it so much.
The two other titles that stand out for me are A Touch of Zen and The In-laws. I've never watched either movie but they both look like films I'd be interested in seeing. Carnival of Souls upgrade is cool, but I need to watch that film first. The Resnais movies (Night and Fog... Muriel, or the Time of Return) are very good too, but I am not a super big fan of this director. Basically there is one "day one purchase" for me for the July releases. A good month overall. |

The New World will be day one for me. It's one of the few Malick films I've seen and liked.
I suspect my opinion on Carnival of Souls has been severely tainted after watching it as part of an Elvira show. I thought the film was cheap, sure. But given all the praise it continues to get, I think I will have to buy a copy and give it another shot, without Elvira's comments. ![]() Touch of Zen will be a blind-buy for me, I just like the looks of it. Was hoping for Dragon Inn too (which would also be a blind-buy, but I keep hearing about it so I figure it must be great). I assume that one will come later? Haven't seen the others, but it is a good-looking line-up. Between these, other announced titles, and previously-released ones, this is one awesome year for Criterion. ![]() |

Carnival really didn't do it for me. The New World and A Touch of Zen for me. Possibly Muriel too. Interested in seeing the In-Laws too. |
