I watched Pina last night for the 2nd time (the first time I had borrowed the movie from the library), and enjoyed watching much of the choreography. Tonight I'm going to watch the supplements and what Wim Wenders has to say. Three nights ago I watched The American Friend and enjoyed it so immensely that I rewatched the film two nights ago with the commentary track activated.
I still want to check out Alice in the Cities. I've already decided I'm blind-buying the forthcoming Wenders Road Trilogy though and will watch that film from that box set. |

I continued my Bergman kick last night and watched The Virgin Spring for the first time last night. This goes to #3 on my Bergman list behind Persona and Wild Strawberries.
On the surface it is a little fairy tale-ish, but I thought it brings moral dilemma and deeper topics (religion, good/evil, family) to light as well as anything of his I've seen. I wasn't appalled at the pivotal scene in the middle of the film, but I was shocked at how raw this seemed for 1960. I was completely absorbed into the action and thought the ending was terrific even if it did get a little melodramatic. I'm a big fan of Korean revenge flicks because they make movies Hollywood wouldn't dare produce. Virgin Spring felt like a forerunner to I Saw the Devil - my favorite revenge flick. 9/10 |

I was on the road today and listened to several YouTube reviews on VS. Everyone mentioned Craven's film. |

I meant THE NAKED ISLAND, which boasts one of my favorite film scores. It's a score that really hasn't been released on LP or CD (other than a suite on an obscure Japanese disc of some sort). Since the film has very little dialog, I'll play it occasionally just to enjoy the music.
In college back in the seventies, I booked the film for a screening on campus. While it played, I sat under the auditorium's ceiling speaker and actually recorded the soundtrack on a portable tape recorder. Of course the sound was terrible, and you could actually hear the running of the film projector throughout. I've long since discarded that audio cassette tape, and now look forward to having a legitimate recording of the wonderful score. Last edited by Jobla; 05-10-2016 at 10:24 PM. |
