Not only that, but it seems I never get a real response. I just get those standard copy-and-paste, PR responses.

I don't know why Criterion doesn't work out a deal with them for the rights again.
It's not StudioCanal that's the problem, it's Lionsgate, who is the US licensor for the StudioCanal titles. Word has it that they're more interested in them for the digital platform rights than physical media rights.

The reason why Criterion lost the rights to StudioCanal titles is said to be that StudioCanal wanted to license the entire catalog at once. Criterion only wanted to license individual titles.

Just came back from seeing the new 4K restoration of Ran in theaters. It was beautiful to behold on the big screen. The restoration is the best the film has looked by far, and the greenish tonalities we see on the international BD's weren't as pronounced here. The film itself, which I've seen many times, just gets better with multiple views. I've always considered Seven Samurai his best, but this may just be Kurosawa's greatest film achievement.

it looks interesting.
I've seen it! It's a masterpiece. It's a coming of age movie set during Mao's Cultural Revolution. It is historically significant, visually beautiful and really well crafted. Mainland China has so many great films, this is one of the best

They're Facebook page doesn't really have any interactivity (at least not between Criterion and other FB users).

Asking them about the color timing is pointless anyway since they had zero involvement with it. Find contact info for the people that supervised it if you want actual answers

It felt so impersonal; I wasn't invested in any of the characters, I was just watching things happen. Mrs. Miller in particular wasn't likable in the least, IMO.

Is this version being sold on Blu-ray in the US? I can't find a listing for it on Amazon.

Anybody else working on their want list for the upcoming Barnes & Noble sale this evening? I'm trying to narrow mine down, with very little success, thus far.

Nope, this would be the StudioCanal import from England. I haven't heard of any plans for the new 4k restoration getting a U.S. release; hopefully, we will all be pleasantly surprised.

The Criterion sale is probably going to be a bust for me this time around. In fact, Carnival of Souls and The New World are the only purchases that I can think of right off the bat. (I've already pre-ordered Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, since I had a chance to grab it at Deep Discount for not far above half price by using a code.)

I will be focusing my fiscal efforts on some Kino Lorber film noir and western titles around the same time frame this year.

Just watched Kurosawa Red Beard and was blown away, it's definitely in my top 3 Kurosawa's along with Seven Samurai and Ikiru with maybe High and Low a bit behind, sad to read it was his latest collaboration with Toshiro Mifune.

This is the perfect example of why I love long movies, even if you are not grabbed by the beginning there is something special about the way the characters evolve during the 3 hours that wouldn't be possible to achieve in half the time.

The score was a bit weird though, not sure what's the story but It felt a bit overdone at times and different in style to what I remember hearing in his other movies.

Also saw Sawdust and Tinsel which is pretty good, nothing groundbreaking about it but it has all the aspects I would expect from a good Bergman movie.

An upgrade of any of those would be welcome.

Why this evening? The sale isn't for another 3 weeks.

I did it last week I have one of those $100 gift cards for $73 a while back from eBay, I am looking to spend it in:

The Manchurian Candidate
A Brighter Summer Day
The Bicycle Thief
The Player
Night and Fog

The New World will have to wait for the next Flash sale.

It has Harriet Andersson; that's enough for me.

I tend to obsess over my list for weeks. It's part of the excitement.

One of my favorite Harriet Andersson films is Dreams. I know it's considered 2nd tier Bergman but she gets a chance to be glamorous and the two storylines with her and Eva Dahlbeck are good.
