I watched several new releases from Red Box this weekend to appease my family and it was mediocre to garbage (Steve Jobs, The Boy & Anomolisa - by far the best). My only Criterion was last night -- Fishing with John.
Maybe you have to have a quirky sense of humor to like FWJ, but IMO it is one of the funniest comedies in the entire collection. The narration was so ridiculous and I loved each episode start to finish.

It's no where near a masterpiece so I still only gave it an 8/10, but pound for pound it is as funny as anything out there. Too bad there aren't more episodes available. And, I have no idea how this got a Criterion spot, but thank you to whoever championed it.

My guesses for Hughes and Zemeckis are She's Having a Baby & I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Jack Arnold? It Came from Outer Space 3D.

Although maybe it gets complex in the end, with people posting in both threads.
I think the spoilering of phantom pages talk is the best middle ground we're going to find.

Well, I suppose that it would depend on what criteria (pun intended) one used for determining "Criterion material", but I think by almost any criteria, Ferris Bueller's Day Off would count. Probably none of his others, though.

I didn't say there is anything wrong.
I just meant, since they released Tootsie why they shouldn't release those 2 80s classics I mentioned?

I agree. I just don't understand the fascination.

But also, perhaps Criterion could stop with this phantom page stuff? I can't see how it is crucial to their web/business model.

Jack Arnold--I would guess IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE in 3-D.

My personal preference would be THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN. Some knowledgeable film buffs feel that the spider sequence is missing several seconds of gore, which I would like to see restored.

I have a few suggestions for Hughes:
The rough cut of Planes Trains and Automobiles
Pretty in Pink with the original ending
Good transfers of the Universal movies, like Weird Science or Sixteen Candles.
A restoration of Ferris Bueller's Day Off for the 30th anniversary

I think another thread would be superfluous and would remove some of the spontaneity of this thread. Citing spoilers is best because it allows people to skip those posts. I do the same when I see a long list in a post.

Yes! That film is an underrated classic on par with (if not better than) Criterion's choices of The In-Laws, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and Something Wild, to name a few.

I think that the
[Show spoiler]"driving the wrong way down the interstate"
scene is one of the funniest scenes in film history!

Well, Something Wild is pretty unique. It's bizarre and unexpected the way it transitions from shenanigans movie to thriller.

Joking aside, with the recent comment from Del Toro this makes it pretty certain for this months announcement I guess.

Yes! Pan's Labyrinth is in my Top 10 favorite films, and while the standard BD release is pretty good, I'm excited to see what Criterion will produce!

I think Breakfast Club is more than worthy, and I'd make a strong case for Ferris Bueller and Weird Science too. Maybe Sixteen Candles. I've never seen Pretty in Pink.

I bought Jellyfish Eyes in the last flash sale.

To be fair, I ordered it along with the Hitchcock set, which I was going to pay $60 for if I had spotted it at Costco a few days before the sale. Alas, there were none in sight. Then the sale happened, and Jellyfish Eyes was basically free for me in a manner of speaking.
