Damn, so sad to hear about Kiarostami. RIP.

I need to break out and watch Certified Copy again. I recall it had a meditative effect on me.

I've loved the two films I've seen of his (Taste of Cherry and Close-Up), so I was probably going to make Certified Copy my blind buy choice tomorrow.

There are quite a few that come out this month I want to get but those will have to wait a few weeks.

This is a problematic release, but the film is wonderful and I don't think anyone will be restoring it any time soon:

Grazie pro-b, my watchlist has been updated!
Although I’ve barely scratched the surface of this ingenious sub-genre, I can unequivocally conclude that apart from being one of the most influential cinematic movements, Commedia all'italiana excelled at exuding scathing social commentary in the form virtuoso entertainment.
Here’s what I’ve covered in the past month or so:
Big Deal on Madonna Street, Divorce Italian Style, Il Sorpasso, The Great War, Mafioso, Il Posto, Seduced and Abandoned.
I’m sure it’s no coincidence that all but one are part of the collection.

I also recently came across this snippet, and according to the legendary Ettore Scola I’m on the right track

You should, it gets better the more you see it. It's more original than Certified Copy too.

Close Up is his real masterpiece, but he made plenty of great films.

Let's hope Criterion releases the Koker boxset sooner rather than later.

Last night, I watched Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind.

Your mileage may vary, but I found Ride in the Whirlwind to be a vastly superior film to The Shooting. Both movies hit the ground running, but I related more to the plight of the cowboys in Ride in the Whirlwind who must go on the run from a posse after they are falsely accused of being outlaws. This film recycles most of the cast of The Shooting to good results, even if Jack Nicholson and Millie Perkins do not get to show quite as much character range. I enjoyed seeing one of my all-time favorite actors, Harry Dean Stanton, as Blind Dick, one of the genuine outlaws.

I still need to listen to the audio commentary track for Ride in the Whirlwind, and I intend to do so tonight after work.

This Criterion Blu-ray set of The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind is a win across the board, and I'm glad that I took the time to watch it at long last.

They're both really good, but very different. I always felt The Shooting to be more of an internal and spiritual journey. Some people out there have brought up the theory that everything in the film is actually happening inside Oates' head.

I know that some people view cinema as a collection of stories which reflect a deeper existential truth about life and humanity in general. That we see ourselves and/or our experiences in certain films that are important to us and thus derive a sense of meaning and purpose from them.

But sometimes I think that's what we tell ourselves to justify our addiction.

Sometimes I think movies are just an elaborate distraction from reality.

Myself, if I found out that I had six months to live, I'm not sure that movies would be anywhere near the top of the list of my priorities.

...I'm not sure they would mean anything at all.
Among other things, I'd think about all the movies I haven't been able to see yet.

Same with foods

places

books

games

people

sex

etc

They would almost certainly mean absolutely nothing for about 99% of people.

I would probably still watch films for escapism during that six month period, but unless I was planning on dying on a film set like Steven Spielberg, their meaning to me would be greatly diminished, especially because my expendable income would be going toward any mind-altering drug I could find. If I know I'm dying, I'm getting lit on anything and everything, and I don't even do drugs. I figure it would be a good time to start, though.

They're both good but still inferior to 'China 9 Liberty 37'.

Yes, The Shooting does have a mystique to it that Ride in the Whirlwind does not have, and, considering the end of the film (without giving away spoilers), I can totally understand the theory that it's all in the mind of Warren Oates's character.

I think he took off after someone in the UK Criterion thread ribbed him for asking the covers on the front page to be rearranged to avoid three B&W images forming a column or something. I've seen him post in some other threads but not as much as before. Come back, Polaroid - we miss you!

Were they mostly big boxsets or 25 regular titles? I will freely admit I've spent more than that in a single day more than once, but never in a single transaction
I didn't really look at his stack. I was wondering if I was standing next to someone I had chatted in here with.

I have a feeling my blind buy for today (Certified Copy) is going to be gone by the time I get out of work...

Has anyone else who has already been to B&N noticed if the Kiarostami films were already gone from their store?

Not looking for sympathy or trying to cause any drama here (will happily delete this), but it was a bit more than the comments they made about my question on the other thread (which may have been silly to you guys but for me it really caused me some problems). It was more the fact they all made out that every post I made was a waste of time and never had any purpose or meaning to it, really hurt me as I saw this place (and the UK thread) as a nice social place to chat about film relating to Criterion - rather than strict discuss this and discuss that, and I generally liked a lot of you guys that post so it I just found it all quite hurtful (I guess I am too sensitive).

When there is no news I thought it was nice to try start a fresh topic to keep people entertained and just keep the thread alive, never understood the point in posting just when there is real news and I suppose people didn't see that and saw my posts as a desperate ploy to get attention/stir trouble (which is not what I was going for).

On a more personal note, I suffer really bad depression and I felt because of the comments made everyone here hated me and found me to be a huge problem, I imagined everyone rolling there eyes and getting pissed off everytime I posted. I know everyone got annoyed with me around announcements due to my excitement, and spammy posts but I never meant to wind people up, I generally have a huge passion for cinema and announcements really make me happy (as stupid as it is), all I do is work so its nice to get excited by things and maybe I just let it get to my head. Also I guess its hard to take me serious as I never went to film school so I can't use as many technical terms, but despite that I do love cinema and the films released by all these companies and I learn from them and teach myself.

So I just removed myself and everyone seems happier so I will stay that way. Just thought I would post to clear it up as a few asked.

Mods are more than welcome to remove this post if its causing topic to go off topic or its not appropriate.

(I suppose to make this on topic, recently saw the remastered Andrei Rublev at my local cinema, got Tarkovskys other films all booked. Great experience and I regret not seeing AR sooner, beautiful ending.)

But yeah here I am - making people roll their eyes, I just wish people would remember there is a person behind these words...
