You said that you liked "Blue is the Warmest Color" but were NOT turned on by the sex or nudity, therefore your liking it so much is NOT motivated by sex. What I'm suggesting is that you don't have to have a hard-on when watching a film to still be motivated by sexual desire in "liking" something. That's the point I was making.

I'm not saying this is YOU. I don't know you personally, or how you think, nor would I attempt to. I was just saying, that from a general sense, this is how sexual motivation can also work when it comes to this subject.
ok. I understand. it seemed that others were affirming the thought that the presence of nudity enhances their feelings towards a film. that's why I originally replied.

again, I don't disagree with anything you're saying.

Hmm thinking about it I don't think sex scenes necessarily can elevate the film for me, unless the film themes are primarily about sexuality.

I don't feel the sex scenes in Blue is the Warmest Color are great art, they may be somewhat necessary for the story but the only time I remember watching a sex scene that I remember thinking was great was in Don't Look Now, not because of how much skin showed or not, but because of the way its filmed, music, etc.

Hmm. I think bad movies with sex scenes can bury a film critically, but a good film with sex scenes can sometimes enhance the experience. Keep in mind, the film HAS to be good first though. If it is a good film, then the sex scenes can be intellectualized in any number of ways as adding depth, thematic resonance, character, eroticism, etc,. to an already good film. But a clearly bad film with sex can compound a bad thing (not for me, though. If a film is bad it probably is better off if they have some sex scenes)

In general, I think more movies should have sex scenes.

Not read the previous comments in detail but.... sex in films.

Why cover it up and be prudish.

People are happy to show violence in all its glory yet they want to hide sex which is more natural and normal lol. Never understood why people take offence to it, if there is gonna be a sex scene, just go for it...

Sex is sex - get over it *shrugs*

Just find it odd people would rather see someone brutally assaulted - guts flying everywhere... yet a too people showing love is horrifying...?

Speaking of art, also find it odd people accept sex/nudity and everything in paintings yet in cinema its the worst thing ever.

agree 100%.. the violence, even on TV shows is appalling

not what we were talking about in the slightest, but I agree

edit: what I mean to say is that the amount of violence that is considered 'okay' for television is appalling.

I like sex and violence equally in movies.

Though not necessarily together in the same scene, mind you.

'Tis a shame. 3:10 to Yuma is a great Criterion title, as is Jubal.

I've dedicated the month of July to watching some westerns in my still-unwatched Blu-ray stack, and I'm having a blast. So far, I've watched...

The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind
Cowboy
Flaming Star
Broken Lance
Johnny Guitar
Man of the West
The Ox-Bow Incident
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
El Dorado
Fort Apache

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)
The Wild Bunch (I had seen it before several times, but not in high definition.)
The Horse Soldiers
Hang 'Em High
The Professionals

The Long Riders (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)
True Grit
(1969) (I had seen it before, but not in high definition.)

I still have these titles left to watch...

Day of Anger
Requiescant
Cemetery Without Crosses
The Grand Duel
Keoma
More Dead Than Alive
Yellow Sky
Garden of Evil
Cat Balhou
The Big Gundown
Chism

Interestingly enough, Blu-ray.com also lists The Emigrants/The New Land as a western title. I guess that I'll be watching that one as well pretty soon.

It seems like there is more sex and sexual situations on TV these days than violence.

That's a fine list of westerns, Great Owl.

Another western that's a favorite of mine is the animated film SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMMARON. Sure, it's an animated film, and a family film, but I consider it to be an excellent western, as well.
