Surprised there hasn't been much noise with Silence. It really would make sense to release this around Dec/Jan since Scorsese's version is coming around that time. |

You know, I was looking for Josef von Sternberg's Shanghai Express on blu-ray, and it's listed as part of the Criterion Collection, though no release date is provided. Does anybody have some insight as to a future release? That would be an instant pre-order for me. I'd absolutely love to get this in the collection!
![]() More von Sternberg, and Marlene Dietrich in the collection? Yes, please!! Come to think of it, they could also upgrade The Scarlet Empress to blu-ray, while they're at it. |

There was a great essay and response from Criterion a while back about the very obvious lack of women in the collection, it seemed they (Criterion) was commited to doing better. The almost complete absence of Sofia Coppola should be a huge target. |

Also, looking at the Ozu and Naruse films on Hulu, it seems some have disappeared and expired. Did they lose the rights? I hope they come out before they can't come out... |

Just watched my Days of Heaven blind-buy and freaking loved it. Not sure why it took me so long to look into Malick's first two movies but glad I did. Such a simple story but told so well and so beautifully that you're totally enraptured the entire time. That fire scene in the hands of almost any other filmmaker would have been half as intense.

Awesome, Lutz. You just made my day!
I watched The Blue Angel last night for the first time (my first experience with any of the seven films von Sternberg and Dietrich did together), and it was incredibly well done. I have the Kino Lorber 2-disc release, with both the original German, and thought-to-be-lost English version (they were shot simultaneously), and it's immediately shot into my favorites list, from not only the period, but any era. ![]() If you love cinema from the early 30s, get this movie. You will not be disappointed! I'd seen some of Marlene's work before (most recently her turn in Judgment at Nuremberg), but this was the first time I saw her in a vehicle that offered her the opportunity of a full starring role, not just part of an ensemble cast (though, as she stated in a brief interview clip from 1970, she was listed near the very bottom of the cast when the film was actually released). This was her star making vehicle, and she owned it. She was simply delectable: sexually charged one minute on stage, sweet and vulnerable (surprisingly so) in her bedroom the next. The film has an almost pre-code feel to it. The innuendos, and the lyrics of the songs, would have definitely caused American censors to flip out had the movie been released by a domestic studio just a few years later. And, it's very easy to see why she remained such a force in popular culture for so long. She had an uncanny ability to re-invent herself, but that chameleon-like ability stems from a pool of enormous talent. As good as she was, though (and she was just magnetic), Emil Jannings gives one of my favorite performances ever. The transformation his character goes through in under two hours is just stunning. Coppola and Laurie Anderson (I'm only acquainted with her music, but what music!)would be welcome on bluray for me. It's sad that CCs relationship with Universal hasn't transpired into some coppola releases. Lost in Translation would obviously be a big addition to the Collection (I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but it really should given the quality of the film). |

![]() It breaks my heart that The Virgin Suicides isn't even available on BD, for instance. Marie Antoinette is available as Region B (which is fine for me these days), but ... I've to pull the trigger on it. I don't know why. |

I watched Eric Rohmer's A Tale of Winter last night, and I wonder if this movie wasn't actually a homage to his old friend Jacques Demy, who died only about 2 years before this came out. The basic plot is almost a remake of Demy's Lola. I've tried googling for stuff out there that might have mentioned this, but I can't find if anyone else made the connection. Anyway, despite all this, A Tale of Winter is classic Rohmer romcom through and through.
Sidenote rant--again, it really sucks how mediocre the Criterion Lola BD is. I don't think it can all be chalked up to source material. You can do better than this even without a negative--there are still plenty of good film prints available of Lola to work from; Vinegar Syndrome showed what you can do with only a film print as your source with The Telephone Book. Doubt it. I imagine that the stuff is just getting pulled as the Hulu deal is coming to its end.
