Finished Watching Chapters 14-20 ...In my opinion.....There will never be a greater war film than Ugetsu. It has the most powerful ending in Cinema....amazing classic Japanese soundtrack too! Inception, La Notte and 2001 ASO come amazingly close though as far as powerful endings....but this is....

My all time favorite film forever!! But still not on Blu-Ray or 4k BR LOL!! Unbelievable!! Just like this film!

Ok I'll let you guys ponder David Finch some more....

Mizoguchi is cinema's Shakespeare...

I wish that somebody would release the 1932 version of Scarface on Blu-ray. That's a Universal title, though.

Well, Criterion DOES license from Universal

I know Dan Hedaya has been in a million movies (great character actor that has the pestiferous, sleazy guy down to a tee), but I can't help but flash back to Cheers whenever I see him. Even though he only appeared on six episodes, his Nick Tortelli character ruined his other performances forever for me.

Since we’re all letting our wishfulness run amok, I’d love some more Hitchcock. I might be clutching at straws here but 3/4 criterion Hitch blus have had winter releases and it’s been over 2 years since The Lodger became available via iTunes.

It’ll also put an end to amazon’s sadistic mind games

But Malle, Hawks or Aldrich are equally welcome.

I thought he was pretty oily on Cheers, too. Didn't ruin it for me any more than John Goodman as Madman Mundt, which was not at all. That's part of the Coens' quirky charm.

Absolutely true. The short scene in Mulholland Drive where he slowly spits out his espresso nearly made me stop drinking espresso for good.

M. Emmet Walsh is another terrific character actor who sadly never got the respect he deserves. He has played a lot of spectacular secondary characters. (In the new interview, he actually mentions quite a few of them).

That was Angelo Badalamenti who spat out the coffee.

The PQ is decent enough, but it could be better. Has a slight video look to it. Still not a bad package.

I've stated over and over they should have licensed the Hitchcock 9. 9 Hitchcock silent films that were recently (2012-2014) restored by the BFI. Only one is available on Bluray to my knowledge. the UK release of the Lodger says it is from the 2012 restoration.

Quote:
The restoration of the ‘Hitchcock 9’ is the largest restoration project ever undertaken by the BFI, which holds some of the most important and earliest surviving copies of the silent Hitchcocks; the restorations also include materials sourced from other international archives. The restorations have made the films crisper and fresher than ever and uncover new layers of meaning, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the precocious genius at work.
Films:
The Pleasure Garden
Downhill
Easy Virtue
Champagne
The Farmer’s Wife
Blackmail
The Ring
The Manxman
The Lodger

Would be an amazing boxset and it boggles my mind no one has licensed and released these films.

The rights are split between ITV and Studio Canal, so it's probably not as straightforward as that

I think the DVD boxset of this trilogy is perfect. An upgrade is never needed. The Before Trilogy is more important due to its mediocre dvd releases. Especially the first 2 in the trilogy.

It's prefect, except it's in standard def and could look a LOT better. It is most definitely needed.

Does anyone know of where I can see photos of the new blu ray box set of Zatoichi? I'm wondering how much smaller the new blu ray box set is compared to the original dual release.

Which cut of "The New World" should I watch first? Actually I watched it once about 8 years ago but I don't know what cut it was...
It was my least favorite Malick film (and I love all of his movies, specially The Tree of Life and the first two) so I'm hoping my opinion will change watching a different cut.
Sorry if its been discussed before. :P

The 172 min director's cut. It also has the best transfer of the versions.

Just like every month, I'm hoping for Bergman's The Virgin Spring.

What on earth does this mean?

Let's just not bother with Blu Rays, eh? Let's just stick to DVDs and all save money.
