BEST MONO TRACK: Dressed to Kill. The track, even though it's mono, sounds so lively, so rich, and so detailed, and I love every minute of it. Thank you Criterion.

BEST STEREO TRACK: Eraserhead. For a film that uses sound in such an surreal way, you have to do the track right. And of course, Criterion nailed it. Again.

BEST 5.1 TRACK (Originally 5.1) Being John Malkovich. Whenever the film goes inside Malkovich's head, the sound becomes so unique. And, you have to do it right. Thanks Criterion for the clarity of the track and thanks Spike Jonze for the great sound design (and film!).

BEST 5.1 TRACK (Remix) Tie between Head and A Hard Day's Night. Whenever the musical sequences start, so does every channel of sound. It just sounds so clean and pure. In fact, I might prefer the 5.1 track of Head to the Mono track. Music is important for this movie, and the 5.1 does that job.

I don't know if I'm an "audiophile" really - though I do have a nice sound system - but Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, and Blow Out are three excellent audio tracks that first come to mind.

I sure hope Criterion releases Klute!! That movie is so brilliant!

Excellent write up! It singlehandedly made me want to revisit Head (which is quite some feat). I can't wait to give it a spin soon.

Blow Out is on the top of my list to revisit with a good setup. I'm sure I'll be blown away by the scene at the park (which may be my single favorite scene as far as sound goes by the way).

As for Lynch...oh yeah. Sound is almost equally as important as visuals. I can't wait to revisit my German bluray of Inland Empire as the sounds do the job of fully entrenching you in Nikki's twisted nightmare.

I'd put it at a 9. I very much think we'll see a hint for in the New Year's Drawing for 2017.

A recent post about audio tracks brought another question to mind. Sound-focused or not, what are some good car features in the collection?

I watched Downhill Racer for the first time the other night and loved it—especially the Porsche scene, a great capture of its sound. There's also a nice bit of Porsche in The Big Chill—though not with much sound. Ben's Alfa Romeo sprint to the wedding in The Graduate sounds great. I like the Mercedes feature in Elevator to the Gallows too. And, though not a car, Mick's motorcycle excursion in If is fun.

Edit: Easy Rider belongs here too

Two Lane Blacktop - 1971 GTO and a Richard Ruth custom-built drag modified 1955 Chevy. One of the best car racing themed movies ever.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - 1971 Plymouth Road Runner, among a lot of late 60s-early 70s cars throughout the film

Dazed and Confused - lots of classic cars throughout

IL SORPASSO!

The car was such an iconic feature of the film that the Italian Collector's Edition DVD came with a figure of the car:

I forgot to mention, I already have The Music Room and it's a wonderful film. I think I'll go with The Big City first and then Charulata. Thanks for your help!

Thanks oildude and IKEELYOU! I'd kinda been giving the eye to Il Sorpasso for a little while, but didn't realize the car was such a significant presence. Definitely will check it out.

Oildude, I can't believe they put James Taylor in a muscle car.

And I forgot to mention Easy Rider, of course.

I'm not usually one for collectibles added in with movies (save for the books, like those in the collectors editions of Casablanca and Lawrence of Arabia), but that miniature car looks really nice.

Also, put me down for Klute going into the Criterion Collection. That's one I've never seen, but a.) whenever we're talking films of the 70s, my father always brings up how much he loves the film, and b.) the film has a fantastic cast. Jane Fonda and Roy Scheider, alone, would interest me. But Donald Sutherland in a movie makes it a must watch. I've never seen him give a performance that wasn't absolutely riveting. Doesn't matter if he's a lead (M*A*S*H, Ordinary People), or in more of a supporting role, even if he only appears on screen for 10-15 minutes (JFK, Animal House, Backdraft, A Time to Kill) --no matter how strong the film is, he's invariably the best thing about the movie.

Don't Look Now will be making its way to my house when the Flash sale goes live. I've never seen it, either, but I've heard it's one of his greatest performances, so I'm absolutely in. Plus, it will serve as a nice introduction to Nicolas Roeg's work.

Since it has been brought up on a couple of occasions, I thought I'd post this.
Just received my copy of Taschen's The Stanley Kubrick Archives and it's probably the most stunning book I'm ever likely to own film or otherwise.

I personally prefer the portrait design to scrapbooky-landscape orientation and feel it's more easy to hold and leaf through. The erect spine looks great on the shelf too. The font is perfectly legible and the stills are simply gobsmacking. I also did a comparison with a criterion for a size reference.

[Show spoiler]

Not a bad way to spend $13

It is that time of the year again, when will the next flash sale occur?

2012 = September 24
2013 = October 1
2014 = October 9
2015 = October 6
2016 =

My money is on October 4th, Dekalog will be mine , probably no Pan's Labyrinth by the time it happens though .

UGH. Such a nice book. Thanks for the pictures. I bought the larger one a few years ago. It's lovely to leaf through at a glance, especially the stills section. When it comes to sitting down to read all the text, its size gets annoying. With such a nice price, I've been thinking about buying this as a reading copy . Still wish I could have gotten one of the first editions that came with a film cell from 2001, and a cd copy of the Jeremy Bernstein interview—they're really expensive now.

MeMynonsense, that's a fantastic looking book. I need to get a hold of a copy for myself. Love Kubrick.

Where did you get yours?

Pan's Labyrinth comes out on October 18th, so it won't be released in time for the Flash sale, unfortunately.

I have no idea when they're going to hold it. Best believe I'll be checking here every day to make sure I don't miss it.

Is it always on a Saturday?

Yeah that is what I meant, sorry if it wasn't clear, even if it comes one week later at October 11, it would already be the latest date ever so I don't think one whole week more is possible.

As for the day, the most consistent has been Tuesday (when new releases come out), but there has been a few occasions where it happened on a different day, Monday and Thursday I believe.

I'm starting to panic because Filmstruck launches in October. I don't have much time to knock out my hulu queue/watchlist.

I hope beta members get a few months free or something
