Picked up Artificial Eye's release of The Double Life of Veronique from Amazon UK along with MoC's one disc release of Shane. The Kieslowski was less than 10 USD. Pro-B likes the UK release a lot. Can't beat it at that price.

This is how 'region free' actually saves you money.

The AE disc is gorgeous.

I agree, being region free is very liberating. It should be noted that "Double Life..." is region free, so everyone can take advantage of that one.

Being region free saves me money all the time, and paid for itself rather quickly. Lately its just been cheaper to go the UK route for pretty much anything. Having said that it can do the opposite sometimes, because I'm going to be a nut and buy both Dekalog releases. Thankfully I was able to pre-order Arrow's version for $52 shipped, so a tick over $100 for both ain't bad.

Had to get Rosemary's Baby and Don't Look Now in the sale, despite this being a packed release month already putting me over my allowance agreement with the wife. Now I'll probably get divorced, thanks Criterion!!!

My replacement case for Naked Lunch arrived today in the mail. Posted all over it were stickers saying Thank You. When I saw this, I had a big fat smile on my face. Has there been any other times where you guys have had a replacement case or disc and the company thinks of way to make it special?

When I received my replacement case for AntiChrist, I opened it up and found a naked polaroid of Jon Mulvaney, sitting spread eagle in the Criterion Closet with a very disturbing smile on his face and a copy of Salo covering his private parts.

If that was his way of saying Thank You, then I did not appreciate it.

Though I have to admit...it did make me feel special.

Which reminds me of:

Amazon UK: The Adventures of Antoine Doinel

Around $25 shipped, hard to resist, but I am pretty sure Criterion will upgrade it soon, hopefully.

Edit: Also: Twin Peaks Collection for the same price

I got the regular Truffaut set from AE (saving it for Christmas), which is also the same price. Same for the Satyajit Ray box set, which I'm also considering. The box sets have a nice small form factor due to the use of slim cases, which I personally like.

That's an insane deal!

I'm not region free but the UK release of Antonioni's The Lady Without Camelias has me on the verge of buying a new player. I'm this close to throwing in the towel on the waiting game. I have a feeling it'll never make it to Region A bluray. ((

Another insane deal is for The Life And Death if Colonel Blimp. The UK release has been well reviewed and can be had for like $8 USD.

Cohen Megia Group is releasing Howard's End. That's one OOP Criterion I won't have to drop $80 on.

That picture might mean something.

AntiChrist is a Lars Von Trier film.

That picture's description sounds like something Trier would make.

I might see a connection here.

Can you send me the photo via PM?

I might work something out.

The fact that it's been out for almost 2 years doesn't give any indication that Criterion will upgrade it "soon," though.

I've more than made up for the cost of the region free player with the absurdly cheap deals the UK seems to get. I don't really understand why there's such a disparity between the pricing of US labels and UK labels. But I've picked up the Eureka Imamura box and both the AE Truffaut boxes for <$100 shipped total (probably closer to $90, but I'll be generous).

So, for less than/close to the sale cost of the 5 available Criterion blus of Vengeance is Mine, The Soft Skin, The Last Metro, Jules & Jim, and The 400 Blows, I've also gotten blus of Pigs & Battleships, The Insect Woman, Shoot the Piano Player, Stolen Kisses, Bed & Board, and Love on the Run (plus Antoine & Collette) (which are all Criterion but still only DVD), as well as blus of Anne and Muriel, A Gorgeous Girl Like Me, The Woman Next Door, and Finally, Sunday from Truffaut, and Stolen Desire, Ballad of Narayama, Profound Desire of the Gods, and Nishi-Ginza Station from Imamura, and the DVD of A Man Vanishes.

Hypothetically, if Criterion upgraded and/or released all of those, it would cost another $290 to get them during a sale, after the $80 for the currently-available four (and not buying the currently-available 400 Blows on the assumption that the whole Doinel set will eventually got upgraded and stay the same price).

2 Years already? Common Criterion.

You are right, but I already ordered it, so now it will be announced soon for sure

The Criterion release of Carnival of Souls gets a lot of flak for not including the director's cut, but, in my opinion, the original theatrical cut is the better version. This is a superb Blu-ray across the board.

The Blu-ray upgrade of Kwaidan is essential, since it includes the full-length film at long last, and because the colors are truly a sight to behold.

Marginally related, but, for the past couple of years, Blu-ray.com has presented my collection statistics as "Strongly overrepresented: Film noir, Western".
Just recently, though, I saw that my collection statistics now say, "Strongly overrepresented: Film noir, Horror, Western."

I guess that I'm officially a horror hound now. I've always known that, though.
