I love this announcement, and couldn't ask for a better supplement than the inclusion of The Front Page. I would put Russell's role in the top 50 American female acting performances of all time. Probably closer to 25 than 50, IMO.

Can't say I really care that much for the cover art, but that doesn't matter much.

Anyone else think the only reason they announced it Friday was for this title?
Yeah, the cover art is a bit strange - not the concept - just the illustration.

Wow just watched McCabe & Mrs. Miller, everyone was right about it, I thought it was great, I think it is easy blind buy material if you already like other Altman stuff, currently watching Short Cuts, now I know were Magnolia comes from another buy for me easily.

Also saw The Immortal Story which I thought was surprisingly good little movie, I always find odd how Jeanne Moreau looks a bit older than she was compared to most actresses nowadays.

On the other end of the spectrum I have to say Beyond the Valley of the Dolls didn't do anything for me, I guess I even prefer VOD, I really have a problem with movies were we are supposed to laugh because they are being bad on purpose or something, didn't really find it funny at all.

A Roman Polanski film. Would you expect anything less?

Maybe I'll watch Rosemary's Baby tonight. I need to do something after seeing the Badgers choke away the game--at home--against #2 OSU. What a dick punch. Three hours later, and I'm still fuming.

I think I just need to focus on films for a while. Watch movies, write reviews, get my blog going. I need to be here more often, chatting with you fine folks.

Just to follow up my comment of Short Cuts and Magnolia I just finished it, this has catapulted to the top of Altman films for me, in the end while there are tons of similarities between both movies I still think Magnolia is a highly original work and for me has the edge due to it's artistic style.

What do you guys think? does every Short Cuts fan love Magnolia too or is it mostly one or the other or neither ?

I like some of Atlman's work (loved "Short Cuts" ) but I wouldn't suggest "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" as a blind buy. I couldn't get past the first half hour. I'd advise checking it out before purchasing

Did you ever finished it?

While I did loved the first half hour and how it set the mood with the soundtrack, there have been some Altman work's that won me over the course of the whole movie instead of grabbing from the beginning, I think McCabe and Mrs. Miller changes quite a bit over the the course of it's length, but now that I think about it, this does feel a bit more serious in tone and not all that similar to other Altman work's I've seen (except for maybe 3 Women).

I love both films. "Magnolia" definitely is an homage to Altman in a lot of ways, although I'd say some of the characters in "Magnolia" are more tortured souls who garner various degrees of sympathy from the viewer (i.e. William H. Macy, Melora Walters, Jason Robards) or just flat-out good people (Philip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly). And Ricky Jay's narration gives "Magnolia" a bit of a distant irony at times as well. Many of the characters in "Short Cuts" are incredibly self-absorbed and unlikable, with terrible events forcing them to look inward at times. I think Altman was staying true to the writing of Raymond Carver, whereas PTA was working from his original script, allowing a little more flexibility with the characters. But I agree both films are masterpieces.

Another influence on "Magnolia" IMO is Alan Rudolph's 1976 film "Welcome to LA". It's not quite as epic in scale as the other two films or as good, but it takes a similar panoramic view of various self-absorbed characters in Los Angeles. I think it's a real overlooked gem. Rudolph was Altman's protege and his early work is very clearly influenced by Altman.

You sure you saw John Mulvaney, and not John Mulaney? I can't find any info online about Mulvaney producing Documentary Now!

I like Short Cuts but love Magnolia, much prefer the characters in the PTA film personally. McCabe is Altman's best for me, I actually find the atmosphere similar to Deadwood than any other western (Deadwood is more brutal, both in its violence and general attitude but when I first watched it, McCabe was what came to mind).

I really need to check out Short Cuts, it seems, as Magnolia is one of my favorite films of the past 30 years. It's one of those movies where, no matter what I'm doing, I'll stop and watch. Love everything about it, from Aimee Mann's remarkable soundtrack, to one of the best ensemble casts ever put together.

Plus, frogs.

WE are Mulvaney.

WE are Mulvaney.

WE are Mulvaney.

Someone should design a t-shirt so the word gets out.

And after that we can try and do a kickstarter to produce and direct: "Being Jon Mulvaney".
