Question: is the Tati boxset worth buying? I've put off getting it for years because Playtime and Mon Oncle look too bright to me. Is the Criterion set superior to the SC box for transfers or they roughly the same? I know the Criterion release has more features, but that is a secondary concern for me right now.

I'm unsure how accurate the stills on dvdbeaver are, but the BFI version of Mon Oncle looks better than the Criterion to me. I should have bought it years ago.

I love Grant, so I'll probably blind-buy His Girl Friday. Fox and His Friends didn't do anything for me when I watched it, so I'll pass on those. The other two look interesting, but they'll probably be rentals.

I'm beginning to think that the Before Trilogy will be a Valentine's Day release (or some Tuesday around that date).

Finally checked out "Pale Flower" recently, which I haven't seen discussed much in this thread. Damn is it a brilliant, stylish film. It's such a huge influence on the modern subgenre of cool, stylish gangster films. It kind of exists in the middle, in terms of tone and style, between Kurosawa films like "The Bad Sleep Well" and "High and Low" and the batshit crazy Yakuza films of Seijun Suzuki like "Tokyo Drifter" and "Branded to Kill". It's fantastic.

His Girl Friday sounds like a solid release, with the inclusion of The Front Page. I was going to complain about the higher MSRP for it, but it really translates to $5 more during a sale, and I'm sure the other film is worth that and more. Can't say I really care that much for the cover art, but that doesn't matter much.

Anyone else think the only reason they announced it Friday was for this title?

The Front Page is an American classic. It's not as whip-fast and funny as His Girl Friday, but it's definitely worth seeing. I'm just very surprised that the latter is not even mentioned on the cover. This should really be treated like a dual release and not like "oh, by the way, here's an interesting supplement you might be interested in."

Yeah, I too thought we'd see some mention of it on the cover. I'll likely check out The Front Page first whenever I get my copy.

No complaints about the January lineup. His Girl Friday with The Front Page looks especially interesting.

But another month and no Dragon Inn?

I really thought they would have released it simultaneously with A Touch of Zen.

I'd like to complete the pair.

OK, this is going to sound sad, but here it is. I've been more or less off line the last few days. Anyone want to tell me what page the releases are on?

It is probably the safest blind buy in all of Criterion. Just about any quick witted comedies owe their existence to His Girl Friday. Amazingly entertaining.

I was just watching Documentary Now on IFC (it's so great, you all would love it)

I would love a Criterion release.

The one and only John Mulvaney.

That son of a b****.

Documentary Now confirmed for Criterion?
I'm not at all surprised, since a few days ago I posted about Salesman, a Criterion release, being satirized on a recent Documentary Now! episode! This is a really cool show and would be a nice addition to the catalog.
