Digibooks, like anything else, can be done well or they can be done poorly. The poorer examples, which seem to predominate, usually just add some publicity stills and possibly a brief essay. As I write this, I can see on my shelf digibooks of The Right Stuff and King Kong. The latter is a thing of beauty, but the former is a sad example of the all-to-common stills-and-essay variety. These digibooks, in my opinion, do nothing to justify their extra bulk and cost.

Hey there all,

I just posted a message in the The Tree of Life screening/orchestra thread for that NYC event that is happening in 3 weeks.

Just wanted to see who is actually coming and what nights, so please post there when you get a chance! Thanks.

Agree with both of you.

Love the digibooks/digipaks.

When well designed, they really elevate the packaging to the level of high art imo.

Sometimes the size dimensions are problematic though. I'm concerned about the Dekalog digibook. I heard something about it being abnormally sized compared to most other Criterion digibooks. That will make it extremely challenging to place on the bookshelf in such a way that allows me to sleep at night.

I don't put up with those titles that stick out like a sore thumb.

...I just don't put up with it.

Everything has to be clean...oiled...so that the action is beautiful and smooth.

Just finished watching 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, and to me very much like Weekend it is a complete mess, maybe only a bit better, but why didn't Godard just wrote a book with all his ideas instead of having characters speak them directly to the screen is beyond me, at least Linklater makes interesting conversations with his ideas, I know Godard is capable of that too based on his previous films, but moderation is key on those.

I wonder where he lost it? or if there is anything in his filmography post 1965 (not sure of the exact year) remotely similar to his previous stuff, everything I've seen up to Une femme mariée is quite good, but haven't yet seen Alphaville, Pierrot seems to start to balance more to his later style.

I also saw Scenes from a Marriage, and Bergman did it again, it amazes me how consistent the guy was, I mean except for his very early stuff he seems to have kept making great movies one after another, a few masterpieces of course, and I bet there has to be a few not so good ones but I've yet to find one.

As for the movie I really love this kind of films about deconstructions of relationships in a heavy dialog driven way (Before Midnight, The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, Two for the Road, etc), will be waiting for the upgrade to be able to watch the ~5 hours version.

Edit: Also there is a sequel? never heard that, but I see Saraband (Bergman last directed film, although made for TV) is a direct sequel of this.

I love digibooks, those are ace. I dislike digipacks, they're a pain to access most of the time and look worn very quickly. That said, at the end of the day none of it turns me off a release.

True.

The reason why I love Digipacks is because the book(let) might be why the case is in this style.

It means more reading material about movies.

I like.

Would be awesome if Criterion could get Saraband as a bonus feature on a future SFAM release. Seeing Ingmar Bergman shooting on digital video is something I need to see...

I won't be seeking those out. I like Mr. Furnier's music, however.

It's only DVD, not Blu-ray, but Vampyr includes a book containing Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's novella Carmilla and the original screenplay of the film. It's a beautiful package.

Completely agree. There are varying degrees of success, aesthetically, across the 40 I have. But even those that don't have the eye appeal I'd hope for provide information that would never be included in a standard blu ray release. The plastic cases are, most of the time, bare bones releases. And while I realize that most of the information within could be easily located on the web, I like having it all in one place. At the very worst, if I need to take a trip to the little boy's room, I have some interesting reading to look over. I'm not hauling my laptop into the commode.

Tip of the hat, Private Joker, for the Full Metal Jacket reference. And I agree that a universal height for the digis would be very nice. I obsess over stuff like that. My ADD, and it's little cousin OCD, still has some sway over my mind.

Yes, they can be a pain to access, and they do tend to have a shorter shelf life. But the outer slips are so easily replaced for only $5 (until they go OOP), and, in the mean time, I have a beautiful edition of something like On The Waterfront, or A Hard Day's Night, sitting on my shelf, looking all fantastic.

@Pedro - I love Alphaville and I think you will, too. I'd say it is more accessible than Une Femme Mariee and like Breathless and Band of Outsiders, it has a more traditional plot to speak of. The sci-fi genre is used really well by Godard - it was a great canvas for him to explore sone of his favorite themes.

It is a lot closer to the more playful Godard that I know a lot of people, including myself, really love.

It'd be great to get a stand alone release from somewhere in the world.

Well as mad as I was yesterday when posting this, Godard redeemed himself today after I watched Masculin Feminin, the long questionnaire style conversations are a standout for me, it's almost like these are real interviews the way the actors react and respond, so natural.

So based on bwdowiak comments it looks like this might be the latest of him I can enjoy, or perhaps Made in U.S.A. but I haven't heard much about it.

You're selling A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)? No way.

Halloween is the perfect occasion for you to enjoy watching that disc one more time.

I'm not a fan of Godard. Hate Weekend and Alphaville esp. But his 2 films I do like are Breathless and Contempt.

I've seen the film too many times haha. It's a fun film, but I've had enough.

I've got the box set, A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, mainly because I love the first film and the third film (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors).

I'm a 1980s kid, of course, so my love of these movies is nostalgia-driven to a large extent.

I think that the Friday the 13th movies are much better in every way, but the movies in A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise are all in good fun (save for the horrible reboot from a few years ago, which I'm glad is omitted from the box set).
