Default February Announcement Wishlist

If I could only decide 1 title announcement for tomorrow it would be the Archers A Matter of Life and Death. Another Warner title would be great. Maybe Criterion will surprisingly announce The Philadelphia Story or A Little Romance. It's hard to comprehend that a movie with three of the greatest movie stars of all time(Hepburn, Grant, and Stewart) still hasn't been released on blu yet. Although, Warner Archives output this year has been amazing. So, I'm optimistic that Warner or Criterion will get to The Philadelphia Story within the next year.

A Litte Romance is Diane Lane's first performance and one of Laurence Olivier's last I believe. It is a wonderfully sweet and charming film that could get some more deserved exposure with a Criterion release. I will take a Warner Archive release at this point also since I have been waiting on a blu release for years.

Quiz Show would be a day one buy for me if it receives a top notch release by any US distributor. I guess I should consider importing from Australia though. Also, Strange Days would be a nice addition to the collection. Kathryn Bigelow isn't in the collection yet and more modern day science fiction would be great.

Sent all of these title suggestions to suggestions@criterion.com some months ago. I imagine that they are already trying to add A Matter of Life and Death with all of the Archer titles they already have. The rest just may be pipe dreams. Actually, The Philadelphia Story may be something that could pop up later also.

I was going to post my congratulations, too, The Great Owl, but it just slipped my mind. That is one hell of an achievement. And, let me say it's one I will never come close to matching. The only way I'm ever making it 26 miles and some change in under four hours is if they shoot my ass out of a rocket Evel Knievel style.

I've so much respect for your doing this. Your accomplishment is a testament to what we as humans can do when we set our minds to doing something great. You're the very embodiment of perseverance and discipline.

Long distance runners are, in my opinion, the best conditioned athletes in the world. There's no stopping for a breath, coasting down a hill on skis or a bike. It's all the runner. I've done distance running, and cross country skiing, but never anything near that challenging. I'm happy to do my two hours of workout six days a week now. What I'm doing will never be as lauded as your marathon time, but every day, I get my arse out of bed, and hit the gym, no matter how I hurt.

I think it's safe to say that you've given me some further inspiration.

/tip of the cap.

Put me down for Quiz Show, too. Would be a great addition to the Collection.

I can't believe tomorrow is the 15th already. This past month has flown bye.

Well usually $5 per item so outer case, book, inner slip...

However in past Criterion have accepted $5 for entire set lol not sure if they still do....

I found a new copy at my used store today for $20 so I snagged it because I see it's out of print.
Just wondering if I should open it, or sell / trade it.
Thanks!
If you like German Expressionism films, you may like or love it. It is a good watch though I've never considered owning myself.

Late 20s Germany was a ground breaking era for film....Between Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang and FW Murnau, there were many great films made...

Don't forget one of my all-time favorite movies from this period, Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel. Marlene Dietrich is simply mesmerizing in this film.

I just got in The Bourne Ultimatum on blu-ray, and don't need the Ultraviolet code that came with it, as I already have it. The slip has the verbiage "also includes a digital copy for itunes", so two people can use it. First come, first serve. If you claim either one, please post what you've taken. And happy streaming

FFNERRYPWH3M (itunes copy still available; Vudu is claimed).

I don't agree with what he says for Yojimbo:

Sure, Seven Samurai is the best known of Kurosawa’s canon, but I say Yojimbo takes the cake because it’s got one thing that Samurai doesn’t: a sense of humor. It’s also Toshiro Mifune’s best outing, bar none.
Does anyone else feel this way? For me the film is a full plate: action, adventure, drama and some laughs (Many of them from Mifune).

I don't agree that Seven Samurai doesn't have a sense of humor.

...did he somehow miss Mifune's performance in the first half of the movie?

Yeah, Seven Samurai has a lot of humour. A lot of the Kurosawa I've seen has at least some.

I DO think Yojimbo is funnier though.

[Show spoiler]Kikuchiyo wasn't a true samurai though, just a crazy poser.

EDIT:
Sorry, I think I mistook sense of humor in samurai for sense of humor in the films overall.

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm hearing rumors about a Criterion release of The Conversation.

I also want to qualify that by saying that the rumors are coming from the voices in my head.

So take it with a grain of salt.

...but the voices have been pretty reliable in the past.

Fantastic film! Louise Brooks is master class in silent acting in it: vulnerable, manipulative and innocent. No wonder she was such a big star. Oh, and beautiful. I have a pic of her and her helmet cut on my phone. And Pabst knew what he was doing with a camera. It's another of those films that came out as silent movies were hitting their peak while the sound ax was falling. Makes you wish sound had waited another 10 years or so.

Yeah, I'm not sure what he's really getting at there. I mean, Yojimbo is set up to be more.comedic in tone than Seven Samurai. And if we're talking comedy, Sanjuro is played for laughs even more than Yojimbo. I don't think Yojimbo is Mifune's best either, but certainly one of my favorites.
