I thought the same, it was hard to connect with anything happening on the screen, and I am also fan of Marienbad, of the Resnais films I have seen, I think Mon oncle d'Amérique is the one that more effectively mixes an interesting storyline with his typical crazy editing techniques.

I finally dropped by one of my local Barnes & Nobles earlier this evening to take part in the 50% off Criterion sale.

I had high hopes that the Black Friday 30% off coupon would work but when I tried to use it on Dekalog, the CSR told me its not just store policy but company policy not to honor that coupon (and it states in the fine text that Criterion releases are not part of the discount either). I tried to tell her that maybe YMMV and that some stores would allow that coupon to be honored. It didn't work.

Suffice to say it, I was bummed. I wasn't expecting for this coupon to work knowing it doesn't include Criterion releases, but I was hoping maybe this particular store was out of the loop, and boy was I wrong.

So what did I do instead? I was going to waste the coupon on a blu-ray movie or maybe a book. Instead I realized that there are OTHER coupons that might still work for this Criterion 50% off sale! Yes. Remember that "$5 off $50 or more" coupon? Well, I found it on my smartphone.

So I took that $5/50 coupon and ended up using it on 3 individual Criterion blu-rays. The CSR said that was allowed so I felt like I still saved a few bucks (which I did).

It came out to about $16 and change for each of these blu rays:

Short Cuts
Punch Drunk Love
Dreams

I'm going to try my luck with the 30% Black Friday coupon later this weekend at another store but if it doesn't work, I'll just use it on something else.

Meanwhile, I think this $5/50 coupon may work for Dekalog too, since it comes out to over $50 before discounts and coupons are applied.

I'm not done yet!

Ah....The MSRP on Dekalog is $99.95. While it's true that $99.95 is over $50, the "$50" applies not to the MSRP, but the price that B&N is offering the product for. Since 50% of $99.95 is not over $50, the coupon shouldn't apply.

Even if it did, you'd get an extra $5 off. Big deal. Dekalog is worth getting whether it costs you $45 or $50.

Every little bit I save makes me a happier man though. It's just fun seeing the price go down on the screen when the cashiers punch in codes and scan coupons.

Dekalog is prob. worth the extra $5 anyway. It will be mine on Sunday.

The $5/50 coupon was something I could always fall back on during the BN Criterion sales (if I didn't have better coupons to use). I always had a stack of them printed (used only one per store visit of course). I used it twice successfully during this sale but the most recent time I was turned down (CSR said no coupons allowed for Criterions). With this I think I am letting my BN membership expire and buying Criterions exclusively from the Criterion store during their flash sales. It will be a little more than what I am used to paying for Criterions but at least the Criterion store doesn't charge me sales tax (6%).

I will own what I want to own, and watch what I want to watch at my pleasure!

DO YOU HEAR THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH!?

(Seriously, though, I do need to watch it. Maybe get on it tonight. UM v OSU is in half an hour. Depending on how that goes, I may, or may not be in the mood for it. )

Wow, clerks/CSR's like that are not a dime a dozen. If such a clerk exists, he/she probably doesn't want to work for the company anymore and is just waiting to be fired. Lol.

Plus on Criterion.com, you get rewards points and eventually a $50 gift certificate for loyalty points. So there's another bonus for buying Criterions at their website. I'll still keep my B&N membership probably because an extra 10% off everything I buy is still nice. And sometimes a family member of mine might want to buy a book or magazine at the store and I'd let them use my membership number. There's no doubt that I'll be taking advantage on one of the only coupons that are accepted during Criterion sales, and that's the 5/50 coupon (and maybe the 8/40 coupon on box sets).

Is there no danger at all of getting in trouble for overriding coupon rejections?

...seems like a risky thing to do on a regular basis.

Where is this store again? I might have to take a trip out there for the next Criterion 50% off sale!

Me either. Started it 3 different times and got bored every time. I think the longest I lasted was around 30-40 minutes. Fassbinder typically bores me.

My copies of One-Eyed Jacks and Night Train to Munich arrived in the mail today.

It was difficult to unwrap them, because I suffered a bad fall during a trail half marathon this morning, and busted my lip, my left wrist, my left knee, my left ankle, my left shoulder, and my dignity. The X-rays revealed that I have a wrist sprain, so my wrist in is in a splint right now, and I'm having trouble with range of motion.

The November sale is a wrap!

Tried numerous times to watch this but couldn't get more than 20 minutes into it. I have this problem with all of Fassbinder.

Thoughts on WKW's Fallen Angels?

I really really really want to love it. I mean I'm absolutely enthralled by every scene featuring the hitman and his partner. However, I don't care too much for the scenes with the mute, his girlfriend, or the Blonde.

I had my eye on the BBS set, but haven't had the money this month. I almost charged it yesterday just to have it, but decided to check it out from the library (on DVD...) and hope maybe I'll get some $ for Christmas

I just finished revisiting John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood, by way of the Sony Blu-ray.

I've probably seen this movie about 50 times, and I love it more with each viewing. I would really love to see this one picked up by Criterion someday, because it's still a relevant work that merits study. It's a tear-jerker, but it's also hilarious in many ways, and it has some of the most likable characters that I've seen in any film.

It's not out of the realm of possibility. It was a Criterion LD release.

So was the Hughes Brothers' Menace II Society.

Speaking of great African American themes, I just got back from a local theater and witnessed Moonlight, which I think is going to be nominated for an Academy Award. It was quite a moving experience at times. Very realistic and honest.
