I put in my end of year ballot for ShellOilJunior.

I'm not kidding, Beastie Boys Video Anthology Blu-ray edition.

This is the best damn DVD Criterion ever released.

Not for picture quality, but for audio quality, and the special features.

But this can be topped.

A Blu-ray of this edition will solve of all the world's problems.

Who agrees?

Who's with me?

If you aren't, then this remix on the DVD for Intergalactic will change your mind.

Dont forget the essence of this site is sharing information about prices but also about the quality of the films. And criticism is an important element to cease the circlejerk and create false expectatives. Even reviews can be very personal and persuasive, with no technical issues. Its a fact recommendations related to other films end up being released reviews can also be very concise saying its very crappy without arguments. So, essentially reviews arent exclusively about physical media, but also cinema, that its a personal experience. Right there is were you notice people who work for the industry and not necesarily hoarders who are less interested in cinema and more in the sloppy titlting of a movie with a format 1:1 from 1911.

Sadly i have sold more movies than i have bought and i keep buying stuff i dont like. But none here and i visit it daily! The big problem that affects me is that there isnt a trades subsection for Europe. Taxes are also a big issue, as in my country noone would buy what i own, and shipping fees to other countries are absurd beyond Europe.

Overall, this site has made me realize little by little that im becoming more and more niche about my tastes and also about the movies i decide to buy. At this moment i wouldnt buy a movie i woouldnt rewatch for example. And i feel very lonely in that aspect when i see only people commenting with huge collections. This new trend of people completing collections and fanboyism. Declaring you only like one brand has a too much of fanatic consumism for me.. Regardles i love this forum, collecting and discovering new films. I love all of the editions i own now and im starting to think in contributing with reviews for the rare foregin blurays i own that arent in the database.
I'm wondering if you are into digital over physical media if you're going to the trouble of paying higher taxes for imported goods such as Criterion blu-rays?

I think the future really is non-physical media as much as I hate to say it. I mean, if its not streaming, its simply going to be digital cinema. At least there you wouldn't have shipping a part of the equation.

The older a person gets, the more refined they usually become I've come to realize. The same is now the fact for my movie collecting. I'm interested more and more in only certain types of film directors and films.

My favorite #1 movie would be the Wizard of Oz for example, after that it gets hard to choose though. I like to pretend I'm in a room with all movies in it that's on fire and I can only carry 10, which do I take? just to help me decide
And now I'm curious...can you PM me your top 10 list of movies?

I totally agree though that a top 10 under your name would be a great idea. Even better, a top 10 Criterion list for just this thread too. Sometimes if I'm really curious, I'll go and click the user's collection and see the breakdown of his/her taste in cinema. I'd bet maybe about half of my blu-ray collection is from Criterion alone.

I just want to address one thing:

You can't judge taste by a collection. First, you're only going off what is available on bluray. Second, some Movies may have been purchased on the cheap, simply out of curiosity, or any number of reasons. These are issues inherent to the act of collecting not taste. Someone may own nothing but Titles from boutique labels, but that doesn't mean they like them or even have especially interesting opinions on them. For example, what if the reason someone owns, say, the Resident Evil Collection over the Kubrick Collection is because he or she would rather watch the Kubricks on the big screen as they are shown quite often at certain theaters.

If I could swap out, say, The Prophecy Collection for Tarkovsky's The Mirror, I would do it in a heartbeat. I could come up with hundreds upon hundreds of blurays I'd swap out for ones I own, but that's not the point. Grabbing The Prophecy Collection was worth $5 at the time. What's it to you?

I hear what you're saying. And that's definitely true for a smaller collection. But I would think once someone gets in the hundreds, those outliers (films not on Blu-ray, ones bought on the cheap, etc.) would be just that -- outliers. If someone has 200-300+ films, the overall "feel" of the collection would be fairly clear after a certain I point, I would think.

But you are right about availability. For instance, if Criterion would ever update either the Dryer box set or the Bergman "A Film Trilogy" set, I would buy those in a heartbeat.

Oh, and I own both the Resident Evil box and the Kubrick box.

My collection gets more diluted over time. $3-$5 Black Friday blind buys and other assorted sales contribute to this. Also, the wife gets an added discount where she works, so deals are often too good to pass up. I just like rolling the dice sometimes and being able to have physical media at my disposal when needed. The urge to revisit things can be unpredictable.

If quality/rewatchability of the movie was the sole factor in buying, my collection would be smaller. And I would get most of my bang for my movie buck out of the holy trinity of Filmstruck, Fandor, and Mubi.

Owning both earns you the biggest gold star! And I'm all frankness, my R.E. set, especially later entries, get more mileage than my copies of The Shining and Full Metal Jacket.

I also have the Underworld box. But, you know, Beckinsale.

But yeah. I can see that. You have over 10x as many Blu-rays as I do, so it makes sense. But with only 272, even with impulse buys and blind buys over the years, my collection is probably fairly indicative of my taste. Now, what that actually says about me -- that's a different question.

This could easily be done right now via the signature feature

My Letterboxd profile only allows a top 4

Monica Vitti, Kiera Knightley, Kate Beckinsale, Penelope Cruz, Veronica Lake, Sasha Gray...I'm starting to see a pattern.

I think we are one very different wavelengths Andrew.

The part I highlighted in bold is exactly what I'm fighting against: Purchasing "things" I don't like or need in my life, movies included.

However, with that said, you have a valid point regarding super small collections of maybe a dozen or 20 films... it would be difficult to even attempt to decipher someone's "tastes" in cinema esp. if the majority of those purchases were given as gifts from family/friends or just random impulse or "emotional" purchases (which I try to avoid these days as much as I can personally).

But even if a person only owns or lists 15 or 20 blu-rays on their profile on this site, it still says something about a person: I can judge them and presume 1) they are picky or minimalists, 2) they're just starting out building their movie libraries, 3) they bought these to resell at a later date for money, 4) they're impulse buys, 5) they're more interested in trading only certain films they've listed, 6) they are nearly done selling off their collection and have narrowed it down to just a few or 7) they're just interested in certain films they want to publicize (or go back to option #1).

There are still many films not yet available on blu-ray or even DVD, so if someone is super selective and only owns a dozen or so blu-rays, I can also understand they only want to own specific films. But if someone owns 200-300 or even 2,000-3,000 films, its still hard to "judge someone's tastes". But I can still judge them.

Yeah, I guess it's not too difficult to suss out, eh? Oh, and Scarlett Johansson is up there too. Catherine Deneuve is climbing the list ...

Well, you know they had to work on getting important titles out like Rumble Fish and Punch-Drunk Love.

Have you ever looked at the "Collection Matcher" link above your Blu-ray collection? It shows you a list of forum members whose collections share the most common titles with your own.

My top five "matches" are...

mja345
jshaide
MTRodaba2468
oildude
NoirFan

I keep hoping that one of my high matches will have two X chromosomes and live in my neighborhood, but that's not the case so far.

...and I just realized, while looking at my collection, that my collection number now matches my birth year, 1972. Cool! Sadly (or happily, I guess), that number will probably change when my mail arrives at my doorstep on Monday.
