I like the movie, but the film already has a decent Blu-ray release. Personally, I've always seen Criterion as a niche label specializing in releasing the most obscure titles and the more popular attractions from art house cinemas of the past, not universally known films.

It's what attracted me to them in the first place.
The thing is, they are also now expanding their business to outside of the US. We will probably be seeing a lot of Boyhoods and Sixteen Candles getting released by them now.

Cheaper is most likely. Still a bit odd considering The Breakfast Club is a no-brainer for which is the most popular out of the whole collection.

So does the venue as a whole represent anything? I assume it's a wedding reception hall?

Buena Vista Social Club, another film we all knew was coming.

I was going to ask the same thing about "THE WALL" behind them

I thought that was represented by the Cuban flag with musical notes? One of the flags has too many stripes for Cuba apparently too, whatever that means

I can't recall who it was that works at Criterion but I seem to recall years back this person wanted to get Sixteen Candles released badly as a Criterion title. so if it is in fact 16 Candles hopefully it gets the best SE treatment possible.

Yo! Mulvaneys, Thanks a ton for Ghost World and presumably... 16 Candles.

Scarlett Johansson and Molly Ringwald joining the Criterion - this cause for celebration.

Wishing everyone a very happy new year!

I would be overjoyed if Criterion put out Lone Star. It's a masterpiece in my opinion

I was hoping for a clue for The Human Condition so I wont have to end up buying the Arrow import. I'll still hold out for the Criterion version hopefully.

I associated BVSC with the musical notes and the venue and I Am Cuba with the flags.

I'm 99.9% certain I'm wrong, though.

The notes only appear to be around the flags, and BVSC is about the music of Cuba, so I have to assume at least one of the flags represents that film. I don't think that needs 2 flags though, and why one has an extra stripe is still beyond me, unless that was merely a mistake lol

Sixteen Candles confirmed. I remember a few months back, we were discussing the curiosity of a John Hughes phantom page that popped up.

Also, could the prominence of the wall in the background and music notes signify Alan Parker's Pink Floyd- The Wall?

Perhaps one represents BVSC and the other IAC?

Still trying to figure out the T with the hand.

My mind came up with Hands over the City (sit T, get it?). #Stretch

Maybe the box with a question mark is the Super Mario Bros. movie.

I can't imagine how the current Se7en Blu-Ray can be improved, but it would be neat to get the Criterion laserdisc supplements that were left off, notably the original commentary and the section on Rob Bottin's make-up effects.

I'd pick up a Criterion Sixteen Candles in a heartbeat (better yet, a Criterion/Universal Hughes boxset, but I can't see Weird Science as a Criterion title). I'd rather see them do Planes, Trains & Automobiles, if only to see if they can salvage what, if anything, remains of Hughes' original cut. Plus it really needs a new transfer.

Of everything guessed so far, I'm most excited for the possibility of Arsenic and Old Lace. Long overdue

Criterion's mission statement opening is "a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, has been dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements." They release whatever they deem to be important so Sixteen Candles or Se7en really isn't surprising if those are the films that are the clues.
