Criterion may be going on a Cuban film kick. A lot of good ones were made after the revolution. Mel Brooks's Twelve Chairs is a poor remake of the Cuban one of 1962.

Confirmed
  • Dheepan (2015) represented by the missing "D" pan on the wall.
  • Ghost World (2001) represented by the whirling ghost.
  • Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) represented by the woman behind the table.
  • The Marseille Trilogy (1931-1936) represented by the fanny pack wearing Caesar.
  • Mysterious Object at Noon (2000) represented by the "?" box and the adjacent clock.
  • Sixteen Candles (1984) represented by the sixteen candles scattered on the ground.
  • Stalker (1979) represented by the cornstalk and the "R" groom.
  • Tampopo (1985) represented by the noodles in the "D" pan on the table.
  • They Live by Night (1948) represented by the gravestone.

Speculated
  • Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) represented by the rope Jeanne Dielman is folding and the bottle of poison on the table.
  • Buena Vista Social Club (1999) represented by one of the Cuban flags, the musical notes, and the venue.
  • I Am Cuba (1964) represented by the other Cuban flag.

Undecided
  • The window with the rising sun, the tree, the road, and the birds.
  • Could the "S" bride be a continuation of The Marseille Trilogy? The bride seems to go hand in hand with the Caesar figure.
  • The "T" arm.

Some Kind of Wonderful ... Please make it happen.

It would definitely benefit from the Criterion treatment.

... and it would also heal my aching heart that has been wanting to see it on Blu-ray.

Man, I might be in the minority here, but I'm disappointed by "Sixteen Candles" being included. I saw that movie for the first time this year and it was single-handedly one of the most racist, misogynistic, disgusting, and immoral movies I'd seen in a long time. Absolutely repulsive. And I'm definitely not a guy prone to knee-jerk reactions AT ALL, but this movie just left me aghast.

I am as well. Of course Stalker would be most welcoming considering the Artificial Eye release I own isn't up to snuff.

The transfer they have on Filmstruck looks great.

I can't find a way to shoehorn in Le Samourai for any of these clues.

I hope Mr. Mulvaney suspended his mailbox account.

While I would agree it is minor Molly Ringwald, your reaction seems a bit extreme. It is merely uninspired to my eyes.

And I'm speaking also as an Asian viewer here.

As far as I'm concerned, The Breakfast Club is the most deserving Hughes film for a prestige release. What ever its flaws, it is an important film for Gen Xers, just as The Big Chill seems to mean something to Boomers. Sixteen Candles is a minor work imo.

I've almost completely lost hope in seeing Blu upgrades for "The Naked City", "Le Samourai", and "Blast of Silence". Ah, well...

A few months ago I saw on Facebook a trailer for a banned sci-fi movie that was getting a festival rerelease and it looked awesome... it was Russian? Or Polish? I don't remember, but the visuals were very post-apocalyptic and surreal with muted colors, almost black & white. I wish I could remember the name of it... I definitely remember thinking it looked up Criterion's alley.

Even if you took away the horrendously racist Asian character, the movie would still be EXTREMELY disturbing for a myriad of reasons.

Kind of disappointing that a lot of these clues were for things we already knew were coming.

Oh no no, it wasn't "Stalker". It was a movie that had been made in the 70s or 80s and banned in its country until just recently.

Stalker? I don't know if that was ever banned, but otherwise your description sounds like it

edit: already answered above

My thoughts exactly.

It's as if Criterion assumes no one makes the connection that Janus Films = Criterion.

Hmmm, looked it up and doesn't seem to fit. The movie I'm thinking about was like about a war between humans and aliens in the future? The movie was banned because it was all a metaphor for the government in power in that country at that time when it was made. I remember the footage was mostly soldiers on a deserted street fighting some weird alien creatures.

The clip I saw was heralding a remaster and rerelease and talking about how it'd been banned for decades.
