Roger Ebert recently added Mystery Train to his greatest movies list. Good read.

Finally crossed one of my Criterion's off of the "must watch" list last Friday when my girlfriend and I sat down to watch Night Train To Munich. Fantastic film! I really did love everything about it. There are some great thrills, some serious laughs, and some awesome performances. I love British humor, so elements like Charters talking about how disappointed he is realizing now that Germany and England are at war he will never see his golf clubs again that he lent to a friend in Germany are hysterical to me.
By the climax, I found myself at the edge of my couch (literally) waiting to see what would happen at last. So much fun to watch, and frankly I cannot wait to see it again. The short documentary on the disc was a great little treat post-film as well. I now know the history of the story and of Charters and Caldicott. If nothing else, it makes me want to rush out and pick up The Lady Vanishes just for more of those characters. I also love the politics and symbolism at play, which I don't know I would have picked up on entirely, so that was much appreciated. It is a bit crazy to me how this movie, which was celebrated as "top 10" best of the year when it came out, has kind of gone ignored in the decades since. There is very little I've found online about the film, and if it weren't for Criterion, I don't know that I would have ever heard of it. Love discovering new films like this because of them. |

As for Spielberg, I'm not a huge fan, but I'm not a hater either. There's definitely a place for Spielberg movies, unlike a lot of director's that put out complete crap. I really can't stand Saving Private Ryan though, which is always cited as one of his best films. Does anyone else like AI? I think that movie is terrific. Also, Minority Report was pretty good, as far as his more recent stuff goes. |

I would have sworn that Night Train to Munich had been announced or leaked as a Blu-ray release from Criterion at some point but I can't find anything about it. I think I saw pre-order pages at B&N and Amazon, too. Am I hallucinating?

If you've seen any of his other films...Coffee and Cigarettes, Night on Earth, Broken Flowers, etc...they deal more with the interaction of characters and personalities more so than following what one might consider to be a coherent plot. This is, in a way, no different than Antonioni being more concerned about the "visualness" of his films or Godard looking at the use of colors or lighting. Besides...it has some very funny moments in it. ![]() |

![]() I'm curious why you didn't like it, other than that it was just "terrible". Was it the ending? A lot of people don't like it for that reason, saying it wasn't true to Kubrick's vision. |

A.I. is certainly flawed, but there were parts of it I really enjoyed.

![]() Trust me...it took a lot of patience and getting to "understand the director" to finally start to enjoy films by Antonioni and Godard. I think that the review by Roger Ebert about Mystery Train that ShellOil very kindly posted, sums up the idea and charm of the film. Hey...I still can't sit through an entire viewing of Last Year at Marienbad, which would get me ostracized by most followers of this forum. ![]() |

Since I'm home sick with "the flu"...I've been checking out a bunch of films on the stream.
Finally had time to watch Wages of Fear...only about 1/2 way through (had to take a pit stop), but it's better than I thought it would be. A bit slow in the beginning, but picked up steam quickly. I might have to add this one during the November sale. When I finish this one, it'll be The Last Picture show later tonight. I did see it, but like Five Easy Pieces...it's been a lot of years! ![]() |
