The Breaking Point for me

Kudos to Criterion for continuing their tear on upgrades. This is like the third or fourth month in a row with one.

Still no Sixteen Candles? Feels like forever ago that they first teased it.

The Breaking Point means another off the Warner OOP list. Anyone still doubting the rest are with Criterion too?

Dreams (Akira Kurosawa)
Blow Up (Michelangelo Antonioni)
The Breaking Point (Michael Curtiz)
Barcelona (Whit Stillman)

Magnificent Ambersons (Orson Welles)
The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston)
A Face in the Crowd (Elia Kazan)
Klute (Alan Pakula)
Day for Night (Francois Truffaut)
Before Sunset (Richard Linklater)
Cat People (Jacques Tourneur)
Before Sunrise (Richard Linklater)

Day for Night and the Before Trilogy have already been confirmed as future Criterion releases, and Whit Stillman has made no secret of wanting Criterion to release Barcelona so that's also likely.

Two upgrades from DVD! Great to see! I'll be buying Sid and Nancy (upgrade from the old Criterion dvd, as I never bought the MGM blu), Hopscotch, and The Breaking Point.

I just never had any real issue with the current transfer.
I don't think it'll hurt if it comes out ahead of another film. Just saying. It's been said enough times but Criterion do need some really popular titles in terms of sales to release the smaller films. I do agree that every movie should look its best, no matter the stature, but we don't live in that ideal world unfortunately. Streaming is a major competitor and studios/labels have to cut corners sometimes, whether because of deadlines or budgets, etc. There's also the fact that many titles are limited by available resources, whether that's the conditions of a rights holder or the quality of the film elements that exist.

I do love Deakins' work, but don't know if that's enough to convince me to buy Sid & Nancy. I thought it was a fine film, just didn't necessarily like it enough to own it. Who knows, I'll see how the transfer turns out and that may change my mind if it really pops, but even then that won't change my opinion of the movie much. La Poison and Breaking Point sound interesting but this month is kind've disappointing for me. I'm rather indifferent at this point to any of the titles.

In terms of MGM titles, I'd've rather seen Leaving Las Vegas. What's the holdup with that one? It's been a couple years since it was teased.

there's someone else, too, who had said they were a big fan of the film. either a poster named Smoss who hasn't been on here in forever.. or maybe is it Edward in Australia? I'm sure he'll stand up and be counted if it's him.

"Hopscotch" is a very good film. Ronald Neame was an underrated director and Matthau is always great. One of those old Criterion DVDs that was always overlooked. It's worth checking out and the early Criterion DVD looked awful. Not sure I'll pick up "Sid and Nancy" as I already have the MGM blu, but nice to see it get an upgrade. "Meantime" is a fantastic film. Probably my second favorite Mike Leigh after "Naked". I definitely will pick up "Breaking Point". Garfield was a masterful actor and Curtiz a brilliant director. "La Poison" sounds interesting, but on the fence about picking it up.

I love Criterion covers. Honestly look forward to them just as much as the title announcements.

If you can find a way to see The Breaking Point before release date that disappointment will turn to excitement! Its a terrific movie.
