I can't stand The Shining because it derails so much from the book. That is not to say it is not a bad film, just a shyte adaptation.

But I know I am in the minority on my opinion on this horror masterpiece to others
You don't like it but at least wish it for this stunning, awesome fan art cover:

I didn't like it either when it first came out. I've mellowed my opinion of it over the years but one scene still sinks it for me.
[Show spoiler]Scatman Crothers epic journey to save Danny. The man risks life and limb to get there and then announces his presence with something more akin to Mantan Moreland in a Charlie Chan film. So much for having the gift.

For me, the 3/5 rating for the movie is spot-on. I found it really middle of the road and it felt like Audiard doesn't have anything to say about the migrant crisis but rides the wave of other directors and just made a movie about it.

Pro-B writing about the film not "delivering an urgent warning that France has entered a self-destruction mode", though, is just preposterous.

Dheepan has many issues, but the review twists it to fit the reviewer's own political views, which is another issue of its own.

Does anybody know anything regarding Criterion's plans for true 4K releases? They have remastered plenty of movies using 4K DI, so when do we see the UHD discs from them?

I really want to see Kubrick's 2001 in 4K! Also Paths to Glory, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut.

I thought Dheepan was an excellent movie.

I watched it at the beginning of the year and it remains one of the best movies I've seen all year.

At the moment they must be evaluating the response to 4K releases from major studios. They're already a niche market, they will not rush to a further sub-niche unless the demand is good enough.

ALSO, they may have to purchase UHD home video rights separately and deal with region locking issues for the new format, which studios that own the content they release on UHD don't have to.

So yes, don't hold off on your Criteron blu-ray purchases waiting for UHD.

Of course it's middle of the road. It's the French equivalent of a Hollywood prestige pic. But because it's in French, a different status is often assigned to it by certain types of cinephiles.

I disagree. If someone has never seen the shining and don't know too much about the plot (yes that IS possible) then this cover just seems interesting. If anything someone might start watching and think "how does he go to that party?"

Just my opinion on that.

I watched it a few weeks ago and wasn't impressed by it. The first third is OK, but it drags way too much past that and swimming in black/white clichés doesn't help.
Oh, and the Terminator section by the end almost seemed to belong to another movie. It clearly took me out of the movie and really seemed like a weird choice of an ending within a movie that wanted to stick to a "certain amount" of realism.

Marketa Lazarová --Slowly realizing how awesome the 1960s Czech New Wave really was. Although Marketa Lazarová isn't as transgressive and insolent as some of the other films from this period, it's quite beautiful, and definitely begs for multiple viewings to properly parse its various intricacies.

We definitely need more Vláčil on blu ray as well.

On another note, I sort of wish some of the films on the Eclipse "Pearls of the Czech New Wave" boxset got separate releases. Most notably Daisies, which I thought was incredible.
