Read that a few months ago and it had some interesting parts. Didn't hook me all the way through though. Just started Hard to be a God, and I seem to be a bigger fan of that one.

Can't wait to give the Stalker movie another viewing.

Not going to go completely insane with the sale this year, but I am planning on picking up the Zatoichi set at long last, and the Cronenbergs (to go along with the Scream Factory Cronenbergs picked up in their sale this week!)

Coupons make everything better. Your friend needs to fight the power.

Default TCM Powell & Pressburger (The Archers) Marathon Tonight

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I don't think it has:

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will start an Archer marathon at 8 PM ET tonight with A Matter of Life and Death followed by Black Narcissus. I Know Where I'm Going and A Canterbury Tale are also on the schedule for tonight/early tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, The Red Shoes isn't on tonight's lineup.

Several Archer films are a part of the Criterion Collection, so hopefully A Matter of Life and Death will be announced tomorrow or soon.

Not CC, but CC related because of Marlon Brando and David Lean…

I watched Lawrence of Arabia and Mutiny on the Bounty both for the first time recently. It is interesting that the reviewer on this site mentioned LOA in his review of MOTB. I noticed the (obvious) similarities and knew they were made close to each other, not realizing that they both were released in 1962.

Anyway, I didn’t care for LOA all that much. The cinematography is great and the Blu-ray disc’s PQ is pristine. (Interesting to see what the format is capable of considering that this is a 4 hour movie on one disc that was pressed 6 years ago already.) I just found the details to be a bit of a slog. As such, the action sequences just kind of happened upon me w/o really understanding the build-up to those scenes. That’s my fault, of course. Just saying that I didn’t really connect with it.

Mutiny on the Bounty, on the other hand, was a heck of a lot of fun. Not perfect by any means, but Trevor Howard and Brando are both really good. The film is exciting and there is a good bit of tension that develops leading up to the mutiny. Knowing that it is coming actually contributes to the fun as opposed to what one might think as a result of the spoiler in the film’s title. The PQ is pretty solid for a disc that was sourced from an older master. 4 stars out of 5 for PQ that the site reviewer gives is pretty fair.

I'm glad that I'm not alone. Fincher has made so many great films but The Game has always been my favorite as well.

Years ago before I first saw Lawrence of Arabia I had heard parts of Maurice Jarre's score here and there. I finally tracked down the film on DVD. The first watch the film felt long because there was so much to see visually and I wasn't familiar with T.E. Lawrence. I had to learn the film's language. Then I bought the film on DVD and watched it a few more times.

It's greatness was apparent. Freddie Young's cinematography, O'Toole's intensity, Robert Bolt's screenplay, Jarre's score (Which I must've played every day for an entire summer) and scenes that left me in awe (Ali's introduction and Lawrence's rescue of Gasim, the look on Lawrence's face when he realizes who he has volunteered to execute to resolve a tribal quarrel, etc).

It's my favorite film. It gets better every viewing for me. It's a treat on blu-ray but in 4K or 70mm it's unbelievable.

Is this also for online too?

The first time I watched it was in a theatre. First the 35 mm, which was still amazing. Later I saw a 70mm print which was even more.

For LOA, big IS better. It's certainly still a very fine film to watch at home on DVD and BD, but on the big screen you actually feel like you're there, sweating along with the characters and being engulfed by the vast beauty of the desert. It's the only 3+ hour movie I've seen in a theatre that I thoroughly don't mind sitting through in one go (although most screenings today do do the 15-20 minute break halfway through)

Yes, though online there is no additional discount for members, and coupons are almost always a no go.

definitely possible that I could warm up to it. I enjoyed it until the point at which I kinda felt overwhelmed by the details of the plot.

thanks for your post.

Not the first time I saw it, but the first time I saw it in the theater was the 1989 Robert Harris restoration (later released by Criterion on LD) at the late, lamented Sack Charles Cinema in Boston in 70mm. I went to a weekday afternoon showing, and the theater was absolutely packed.

thanks for your post.
That was definitely my reaction. I enjoyed it the first time, but also felt overwhelmed by the last hour or so. Second time around, when you know what's going on more, it's much easier to appreciate how well-crafted a movie it is and to find all the subtlety in the low-key sections (especially O'Toole's performance...).

But as others have said, if you get a chance to see it on the big screen, especially the 70mm print, go for it.

I always thought the B&N Criterion sales were 50% off online in July and November even if you weren't members? Or are we just talking the coupons for being a B&N member, which I might have to take a look into doing.

Non-members can buy the discs at 50% off. If you're a member, you get an extra 10% off, so it ends up being 60% off. With the coupons, it was 70% off.

I can't wait for the July sale. I have so many titles on my list that I need to get. Random question: Is it likely that The Last Picture Show will be getting an individual release soon?
