Yeah, the timing on that death couldn't have been any worse. RIP George Romero

And The Silence of the Lambs. Romero had a brief cameo as an FBI agent in the film.

Wow this is truly shocking! R.I.P. Mr. Romero.

I also wanted to echo the love for his extremely underrated Monkey Shines

Here's to emotional gut punches on a summer Sunday afternoon. I have been an enthusiastic fan of George A. Romero since childhood, when I was introduced to his work by way of Creepshow, his 1982 collaboration with Stephen King. Romero's directorial debut, Night of the Living Dead (1968), is still the greatest zombie movie ever made, and his first sequel, Dawn of the Dead (1978) is a gory delight that is still perhaps the best movie satire of American consumerism. The Crazies (1973), Day of the Dead (1985), Monkey Shines (1988), and The Dark Half (1993) are also fun Romero essentials. He lost his battle with lung cancer today, but he worked hard in horror cinema up until the end, and continued to use horror movies as a way to skewer real-life politics and culture with uncompromising relentlessness. I will be revisiting Night of the Living Dead in the near future to remember this cinematic icon, and I will also have to revisit Dawn of the Dead (perhaps with a big plate of spaghetti).
Rest in peace, George A. Romero.

Just read about George Romero's passing. I will definitely revisit some of his films this week.

I had come to the thread to comment on One Eyed Jacks that I finally got around to watching. Although I like westerns a lot, I feel like this one may have been a bit overlong if not for Brando and Karl Malden's performances. Though the actress that played Louisa was quite good as well. It was an odd western as described. Not in that it didn't use the usual plot devises of double crosses, shootouts and romance, but in that the focus was much more on the doomed romance with a western taking place in the background for much of the latter portion of the film. Not that it has qualities typically accociated with film noir, but once Brando's character was
[Show spoiler]whipped and his hand broken, it appeared to be destined that the protagonist would be killed despite finally doing the noble thing as is the case in many a film noir. Surprisingly given the narrative thrust of the film or perhaps not since it was 1961 and Brando both the director and star, the ending appears to be a happy one.
All that to say that I was engaged and entertained throughout and would reccomend it to any western or Brando fans.

I'm devastated. I just sat in shock for a moment. I've been beating the "Year of Romero" drums lately and never did this even cross my mind as something that could happen.

I'm hoping that Criterion will finally announce another Harold Lloyd title. It's been way too long since the last one.

My monthly litany of hopes....

The Lady Eve, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Vampyr, Andrei Rublev, and Hamlet upgrades.

The Pianist, Libeled Lady, Paper Moon added to the collection.

Simple wishes, really.

A little Jean Harlow would be nice!

RIP George. You were my favorite director growing up with Night, Dawn, Day and Creepshow. You still are. Thank you for terrifying me when I was 10 and making me the film fan I am today.

Speaking of Harold Lloyd, hand to the Bible, as soon as I read your post, Ned, the doorbell rang. It was Amazon dropping this off for me.

RIP, Mr. Romero. While I can attest to only having seen one of your films, Creepshow, I know I will be enjoying much more of your work here in the near future, as I have begun exploring horror films for the first time. I never really knew how much I loved the genre, but now I am full-on into it.

Well, dang, I just saw the news. RIP Mr. Romero. I may not have been a fan of all your zombie movies, but you did capture my heart with both Creepshows and the original Dawn of the Dead.
