Finally got my BN $10 reward, so they are coming out slowly. Snagged Night of the Hunter (a blind buy, but I'm missing a local 35mm screening that has made me very, very intrigued) and All that Heaven Allows (a favorite).

There was a window recently that overlapped with the 50% off Criterion sale where you got a $10 GC if you spent $50+.

Just came here to say this. Mine finally came. And minutes later customer service finally replied to my inquiry from yesterday.

I just made a lunchtime trip to B&N. Picked up The Breaking Point. Even though the online inventory checker said the store didn't have it in stock, they did, so don't believe everything you read on the web

Also, I did a ship-to-home of Hopscotch and Festival at the sale prices, which is cool. Finaily, I was able to use a 5-off-50 coupon, so total damage, including tax, was $52.03.

Many thanks to Hariseldon for the pro tips.

Speaking of "Hoop Dreams", I was in Chicago last weekend and went to a screening of Steve James' newest documentary "Abacus: Too Small to Jail". It's a brilliant documentary about a family-owned bank in New York's Chinatown that was essentially used as a scapegoat by the Manhattan district attorney following the 2008 financial crisis. The case eventually turned into a five year legal battle. It's a fantastic film.

The screening was at the Gene Siskel Theater and Steve James did an hour long Q & A after the film was shown. Very, very cool guy. One woman said she had taught William Gates from "Hoop Dreams" in elementary school and wondered what he was up to today. James joked, "Well, go buy the Criterion Blu-Ray right now at Barnes and Noble if you want to find out" before answering her question.

I'm going to be giving the thread a makeover.

On the front page of the thread, I plan to have links to every release by Criterion (not including the titles linked in Bundle IDs as those appear under each entry). Do you folks think it would be cool to break the releases down by month and year? I.E. I'll have a category called "October 2017" and have the following entries linked: Barry Lyndon, The Lure, Othello, Personal Shopper, Twin Peaks, and Vampyr.

I also plan to have a list of all films where replacement cases were offered and include an on-going rumor mill with sources for said information.

Anything else, please feel free to let me know.

Wouldn't you know? Right after I picked up Sanjuro to complete my set with Yojimbo, Amazon drops the price on the two-movie set.

In response to my question if any noir ending is more cynical than Scarlet Street's, someone said The Breaking Point. While I cannot agree (I honestly don't think anything will top that Lang ending), it really packs a wallop of a punch.

And what a film. Seriously one of the greatest discoveries I've had all year. It's one of the reasons I love the collection so much, to discover true gems like this. It's just a really great piece of storytelling that doesn't hold back any punches, impeccably performed and shot (that smooth gliding camerawork.) Garfield is pitch perfect in the role, so much so that it's kind of the Pacino-Godfather situation where I can't even fathom any of the other names listed. Phyllis Thaxter is inspired casting and adds a layer of genuine sincerity and weight. And Patricia Neal...

It's the kind of film that I already want to watch again. Glad I picked it up before the sale's end.

In all seriousness, I wonder how many people paid attention to the fact that it was Pro-B and myself who have kept the thread's OP updated for the past 3+ years by editing Riff's initial post.

Out of curiosity, after looking back on page 1 of this thread, I decided to search for my very first posting in this thread.

I found it, on Page 2,837, posted 11/28/2012:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...78#post6803378

What should I do for my 5th anniversary? Which film should I watch?

I mentioned The Breaking Point because you asked if there was any noir with a bleaker ending. It was the first film that came to mind since there's not very much to feel good about. Nobody comes out ahead and there's a heck of a lot lost. I will also mention the performance of the great Juano Hernandez as Garfield's partner. And, as I've mentioned before, the closing shot is devastating. This is my favorite Noir so I could go on and on singing it's praises but instead simply recommend it highly.

I saw The Breaking Point for the first time this past Tuesday night (a rare Day One purchase and viewing for me.) This movie is truly a hidden gem. It's another example of how devastating the McCarthy hearings were to the film industry.

Well, I'd still disagree entirely. But that's for another discussion.

EDIT: I will say, I woke up with that final image in my mind. I may watch it again today.

A bit unclear on this, but given the Olympics box set, won't there be any other releases for December?

Ok, guys, I need some help narrowing down my choices. I'm going to head over to my local Barnes & Noble, and pick up two more blus before the sale ends. My girlfriend just had her birthday on Friday, and I spent an insane amount on her presents. So, I'm going to try and be good here.

I've narrowed it down to the following candidates: Steve McQueen's Hunger, Kubrick's The Killing, Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ, Baker's A Night to Remember, Antonioni's La Notte, Ford's Stagecoach, and Clouzot's The Wages of Fear.

How the hell do I choose? I really want Hunger. I'm a real big Michael Fassbender fan, and I thought 12 Years a Slave was exceptional. I plan on watching Shame and Hunger back to back.

Input would be appreciated!
