So I finally got around to watching "Blue Is the Warmest Color" last night. I have owned it forever and I know I am late to the game.

The film had everything I enjoy from artistic modern foreign films. It was very heart wrenching to watch Adele go from innocent and curious to happy but insecure and finally to regret and heartbroken. The performances all around were mesmerizing.

I just had to tell someone how great and beautiful a film I thought it was since my closest circle of friends are not into Criterion art house movies. This is one of the better blind buys I have had and look forward to revisiting it a few years down the road.

Wow, these guys are awesome... and may have broken the record for most movies taken. I wish Good Time was in theaters near me for more than 2 weeks.

Default Werner Herzog!!!!

A few nights ago Turner Classic Movies(TCM) aired several of Werner Herzog's films. Although I had seen Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe and Burden of Dreams dreams before, I set my DVR to record them along with Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre the Wrath of God, Stroszek, etc.

I have already watched Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe and Burden of Dreams for the second time last night. I could listen to Werner Herzog talk all day long about almost anything I think. If the words in these 2 documentaries were spoken by anyone else, I don't believe that I would be quite as interested in the events going on.

I'm actually inspired to eat a shoe one day if I can find someone to make a life-changing bet with me like Herzog did with Errol Morris and if I'm able to get the shoes into a crock pot to tenderize over night. I wouldn't want to eat them like Charlie Chaplin in The Gold Rush without any seasoning or boiling. By the way, Herzog ate a shoe after Morris was able to get his film Gates of Heaven completed. So, Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe is available on the Gates of Heaven blu-ray and the Burden of Dreams DVD that will hopefully be upgraded by Criterion soon.

It seems that most of Herzog's films are in the Shout collection that was released back in 2014. According to the review here on blu-ray.com, the video quality varies somewhat from film to film, but overall the quality is very good. So, I may have to consider picking that set up someday soon if I enjoy Fitzcarraldo, etc.

I have a different take on it: Very few people now have the attention span it takes to watch a film in thoughtful silence, or listen to an album all the way through in one sitting.

Streaming is an ideal fit for the ADD society, where it is considered acceptable to watch a movie in bits on a telephone when one "has the time."

Movie trailers now average two and half minutes and seem to show all key scenes; basically, allowing people to watch a condensed version before deciding if there is "time" to go and see the whole thing. And then when they get there, they fall asleep and snore (happens every time I go), seem more interested in eating nachos and popcorn for two hours straight, or like the guy in front of me recently, get bored and look at their phone (incredibly, he was shopping for Timberland boots, until I tapped the back of his chair and asked him to desist).

Glad to be one of the "weirdos."

That's nothing new, though, have you ever watched old trailers?

Now that's a beautiful thing, is it not? The juxtaposition of DeNiro & Keitel's characters is simply perfection.

I've graduated from a rural party-line to creeping slow DSL. Streaming still isn't an option for everyone.

Yes. And some of them are equally as long. Just seems to me that TV slots are longer nowadays, and certainly previews in the cinema. Or maybe they have become too revealing? In any case, I try not to watch them for films I have an interest in seeing. My girlfriend has been embarrassed many a time in the theater as I stare at my shoes and hum with my fingers in my ears.

Trailers used to be longer and have actually gotten shorter over time. Trailers aren't allowed to be longer than 2 min 30 sec in the theater as of a few years ago. Back then they went on forever and were just as revealing as today's trailers, probably more so.

For sure. Has anyone seen the trailer for Psycho?! It gives away just about everything! Hitch is hilarious though.

There must be a limit to how many they can take, right? Is it how many they can fit into one of those bags?

I'd wear one of those Harpo Marx coats that you could fit an entire Costco inventory in.

That's strange, since Hitch was adamant about the movie not being spoiled. The print marketing seemed to follow his wishes, bizarre that the trailer did not. But yeah, trailers have always given the whole movie away. Spoiler-sensitive culture seems to be a more recent thing, like the past couple decades or so.

The Psycho trailer is basically Hitch doing a tour of the sets and talking about the grisly murders that occurred there. So I suppose it's a bit spoilerish in that it tells you that murders happen and where, which would be obvious to anyone going into the film anyway unless they live in a total vacuum. The final shot of the trailer is the shower curtain being pulled away and Marion Crane screaming (actually, Vera Miles in a blond wig with the film's title obscuring her face). But overall it's still pretty vague.

The whole concept of not spoiling a film was pioneered with the marketing campaign for Psycho to preserve certain plots twists. This was because at the time people not only didn't care much about spoilers, they actually wanted to know what they were in for when they went to see a particular film. People would actually go to a movie midway through a showing, watch through to the end, stay for the beginning of the next showing and leave at the point where they came in the first time around. The marketing for Psycho about not letting people in once a showing began was a response to that practice, because people would wonder
[Show spoiler]why they were not seeing Janet Leigh, who was supposed to be the star of the movie.

Does that work? Please feel free to purchase Criterion DVD's of Sisters and Great Expectations to expedite their release on blu ...meanwhile, I'll pick up the barebones blu of Blue Is The Warmest Color to facilitate the release of that long-promised special edition...

Believe it or not, there was a time before the internet when it was possible to see a movie without being totally inundated with information about it beforehand. I remember the first time I saw Psycho, being quite surprised that
[Show spoiler]the character whom I assumed was the lead character in the movie would get killed off 30 minutes into the movie.
That kind of blew my young mind. As for people being less spoiler adverse back then, I remember people interrupting talk about a movie, with "wait, don't tell me" because they wanted to enjoy the suspense and the surprise themselves.

Speaking of Pycho and spoilers, I once heard a story about a Spanish distributor who printed up posters for the movie that advertised the movie about
[Show spoiler]the boy who dressed up as his mother
. I don't know if that is apocryphal or not, but it's a great story.

As for the trailer, I think it's just Hitch being Hitch.

I saw Psycho long before the advent of the internet too, but by then it was already a cultural phenomenon so I was aware of the shower scene but not how the film ended, so that was a total surprise to me. But being oblivious to those plot twists, and being completely unaware that Psycho is a movie about people getting murdered are two different things.

I can totally understand being annoyed at spoilers such as who the killer is in a murder mystery, that's part of the fun of those types of films. It's just that I think nowadays some people are sensitive to seeing anything in a movie as a potential spoiler. I've even seen people (possibly tongue-in-cheek mind you) complaining about TITLES being spoilers.
