PORGY AND BESS (operetta if not a play)
Any release of Porgy and Bess would be a miracle. I don't think it's ever been legally released on any home video format and they very rarely screen it. The last screening I know of was around 10 years ago in NYC and I jumped at the opportunity to check it out. It was the only time I've ever seen it.

I see Funny Games (1997) is up on FilmStruck under the Criterion banner! (I apologize if this has been pointed out)...but I hope this means it'll be getting a physical release soon!

Edit: so is Haneke's The Castle, but I am not familiar with that one.

A duel release with the English language version could be a fun release. Does Warner still have that one? I mean, it seems pretty certain they would never do anything with that themselves. It wasn't a success at the box office and it's basically never mentioned. But for comparison sake, Haneke remaking himself shot-for-shot, it seems like a worthwhile inclusion on a Criterion FUNNY GAMES disc.

I'm quite sure I could fill my movie time with just Criterion, Arrow, MoC and a couple other labels for instance. Would I miss out on some other movies ? Sure. But again, you only have so much free time to begin with.

Take November 2017 : there will be 5 Arrow UK sets (Kore-eda, Godard / Gorin, Guitry, Film noir, Suzuki), the French 6xHou Hsiao-hsien set, 4xHitchcock, some Gaumonts, some Pathés, a few MoC already, some Criterions, and now the Keaton.

I won't even be able to watch all these straight away anyway. I probably can prioritise stuff a bit differently but even so, that's probably enough to keep me busy at least a whole month. So I doubt I'll feel like I'm missing on other good movies in the meantime.
I appreciate what you are saying but I have the same issue with 'label following' too. I don't know, I guess I just think it should come to film first, everything else second.

I watched it this past summer too and it was one of the better DVDs in my collection in terms of PQ. I'd actually be fine with that if it never came out on bluray.

So my list of Criterion blu-rays to see has kept expanding since I have not been able to watch as many movies as I would like, hence my wishlist is smaller than usual for the coming sales.

Does anybody have good blind buy recommendations from titles released in the last 7 months ?

I already plan to get: Rebecca, War Trilogy, Ghost World and Good Morning.

And I already seen Vampyr, The Piano Teacher, Certain Women, La Poison, Sid & Nancy, Dheepan, Jeanne Dielman, Stalker and Rumble Fish.

I guess that doesn't leave such a huge number of remaining titles that I can't watch on Filmstruck:

45 Years
Being There
Woman of the Year
Straw Dogs
Lost In America
The Breaking Point
Festival
David Lynch: The Art Life

I read somewhere once that the Gershwin estate didn't like it at all and the rights reverted to them after only a few years (5?) so that's presumably the reason for its elusiveness. If what I read is correct, obviously.

I bought Hunger from the Barnes & Noble sale, and there was no booklet. I contacted Criterion by sending an email to mulvaney@criterion.com, attaching a pic of the receipt from my purchase. Jon sent me an e-mail the next day, and sent a booklet in the mail for me free of charge. I got it a few days later.

And then when I opened it not a single booklet was in it. It was wrapped and new, but I don't know if I should contact Amazon? Has this happened to anyone before? It did not appear to be resealed or repackaged, but I bought it because of the booklets as well.

I don't know, there are just so many good movies being released on good BDs, there's too much to watch already, hence my remark.
And since I'm veeeeery curious and buy roughly 25 releases per month but only watch half of them... So I stopped focusing on the movies a long time ago, and just try and watch as much as I can and am happy just swimming into all these.

I think Death of a Salesman would be a great companion to Criterion's Salesman. I was in sales for a while and I could totally relate to what Paul was going through.

I'm excited to get Breaking Point at the next B&N or Criterion sale-- I'm a big John Garfield fan....

For anyone who's seen it-- how does the PQ compare with what Criterion accomplished on Mildred Pierce, a really stunning remaster imo?

From that group, I'd saying Being There would be the safest blind buy, unless you're already a fan of Lynch, Peckinpah, or Tracy & Hepburn.

I'm really late to the party with this one, but yesterday I finally upgraded my DVD of GIMME SHELTER to BD. I wasn't sure it would be much of an upgrade, since the DVD has the DTS track and the movie was shot in 16mm... but that BD absolutely blew my mind. It looks far better than the SD (more than just the usual uptick in quality inherent with the resolution hike), and that new DTS 5.1 mix is simply mind-boggling in its ability to immerse the viewer in the experience. I actually felt that I was in the middle of the chaos, and it was far more unnerving than ever.

If you're a fan of the film and believe your DVD will get you by, think again. That BD is a completely different experience.

Same here, I'm counting down the days to the Criterion Flash Sale so I can buy Breaking Point. Huge fan of Curtiz here.

The latest e-mail from the newsletter of Rialto Pictures said that The Crime of Monsieur Lange and Bob le flambeur will premiere at the New York Film Festival with a 4K restoration, I see that the second movie had a Criterion DVD that went OOP since it the rights were with Studiocanal. Wonder if either these two would be Criterion possibilities. Took a quick look at the plots of both and they are my type of films.

Same. He should be mentioned among the greats, and I don't see his name come up nearly as often as one would expect.
