Damn it, now I'm pissed I didn't buy Barry Lyndon. Those extras look outstanding. I could just wait until Barnes & Noble do their sale though, right? Grr.

I want to order Diary of a Lost Girl and Paper Moon from Amazon UK. I know as soon as I do, though, Criterion will do a Bogdanovich box set just to spite me.

I absolutely loved it, but be advised that the pacing of the film is not slow; it's practically non-existent. Dielman has a voyeuristic feel, and, at times, the scenes feel almost claustrophobic. But this is clearly by design, as the viewer is meant to experience how mundane Dielman's life really is. In this regard, Chantal Akerman's film is incredibly successful. You are completely immersed in the arduous tasks of her daily life; you are meant to feel her life weighing down upon you. Delphine Seyrig is magnificent in one long take after another.

It's a fascinating character study, to be sure.

Should I hold my breath and wait for a blu ray of Godard's 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her, or should I just get the dvd?

Not sure. There was just a screening of Godard films in Brooklyn last year. That was among them. That and Masulin Feminin are the only HD hold outs from his First Wave era. And The Rifleman.

It's weird, Filmstruck is the only app that has ever done this. And it's only like 25 percent of the films I've tried playing.

Maybe the Roku Express is just junk.

I actually believe this. Unfortunately. Seeing BC actually dashed my hopes for any other Hughes films, especially the non-directed ones. However the bonus features on BC are great for fans.

Any suggestions? I've heard of the director, but I've never seen any of her works. I'm thinking of ordering Ikiru and either The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant or World on a Wire, however, I am trying to--as my lit professors say, "a comprehensive survey"--expand my knowledge and taste in film. I've seen Seven Samurai and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, which I loved, so it's a must to watch more of their films. Oh, I'm considering Dekalog, as well.
Well, let me tell you Jeanne Dielman, 23 is not for the faint hearted.

Cried myself to sleep. It was like waiting 3hrs for your dinner to be served at one of those fancy restaurants.

I vividly remember getting up several times to make myself few PB & Jelly sandwiches...

... and of course some hot chocolate with marshmallows thrown in to ease the pain.

If you love food, perhaps you might wanna look into Tampopo it's one interestingly delicious film.

^ It's got everything going for it: Sushi, Ramen, Sex and Ken Watanabe.

I remember learning years ago that Criterion had several David Cronenberg films, as well as several David Lynch films, and I remember thinking the end of that year was gonna be massive and expensive, as I was naive enough to think that we had Cronenberg and Lynch box sets coming. Nope. We didn't get any of the films the rest of that year, and then they all started to trickle out, one at a time, over the next THREE years...

They don't do sets or bundles much on things they believe will sell well on their own, individually. They only seem much anymore to bundle things they don't think would sell well one at a time.
Well, that gives me SOME hope. And 50 mins of the missing BC footage is a grand way to start the New Year (I'll have something to watch during my hang over that day.)

You got some awesome movies right there.

Pickpocket is such an excellent film, well made and definitely good replay value.

Artificial Eye (UK) will be releasing Au Hasard Balthazar on Blu-ray next year...

... hopefully that means Criterion too is working on their own remastered version.

A couple of recommendations for the Flash Sale. I watched both of these in the past month and came away very impressed.

The Breaking Point is one of the best noirs I have ever seen. Absolutely loved it. Amazingly crafted film with outstanding performances and edge-of-your-seat moments that will leave you transfixed. Michael Curtiz's direction is superb and John Garfield leads a stellar cast in the story of an ex-WWII naval hero trying to make a living as a charter boat captain and barely hanging on. A fateful trip with a high-roller passenger changes his life, and that of his wife and kids, forever.

I had never seen The Breaking Point, but had seen the earlier version To Have and Have Not. As much as I love Bogey and Bacall in the original, the remake a few years later is by far the best. The two films share similar DNA and story elements, but are completely different films, so for those like me who have already seen To Have and Have Not, be prepared for a memorable movie-watching experience. The final scene of The Breaking Point is one of the most poignant, powerful, and heartbreaking ever put on film.

Also watched They Live by Night....loved that one too. After it ended I sat in my chair a moment like I had been punched in the gut before moving on to the special features. The more I think about it, the more I consider it one of the truly greats of the genre and one of the best films ever made. As the special features make clear, Nicholas Ray's debut feature had a huge influence on many films that came after.

This one-two noir punch from Criterion is sublime. Both of these films belong in everyone's collections.

Thoroughly seconding The Breaking Point (and To Have and Have Not as well, available from the Warner Archive Collection)! The Breaking Point is the remake, though—To Have and Have Not was 1944, with Bacall's screen debut. The Breaking Point was 1950. I'd say The Breaking Point is certainly the more resonant these days, partly due to its devastating if glancing treatment of race, but also just the general desperation on display. To Have and Have Not relies much more on Bogart's nobility and honor under pressure, whereas Garfield is just flat-out cornered. It's a very dark, bitter film, with performances of surprising naturalness for their time, excellent across the board.

Dangit... I had skipped it since I saw it so recently, but I may go back in the morning for it and Mildred Pierce and something else. I didn't get a blind buy this time, and I normally like to throw one blind buy in during a flash sale.

If I do, which blind-buy should I spring for:
Woman of the Year
The Philadelphia Story
Only Angels Have Wings
It Happened One Night
His Girl Friday

I'm leaning toward one of the Hawkses...
