I can't watch anything that requires some kind of brain power past 6 PM. I think I saw Stalker at like 3 PM. That's one way in which I have definitely started to feel old.
Nice

I wish I had something like that.

We all have our individual tastes, of course (no pun intended). I thought The Lure was quite good and extremely relevant with current events, but like many Criterion, certainly not for everyone.

Personal Shopper is the best of his films released by Criterion bar none.

I found it to be haunting and puzzling throughout and it's honestly stayed with me for the most part since I watched it several months ago.

I haven't seen a lot of Assayas but Summer Hours is one of the great films of the 2000s.

Here's my review:

PERSONAL SHOPPER

A

I'll admit that I don't necessarily understand this film. But I think that's the point. How tragic is it? How terrific is Kristen Stewart? How strange is this film?

I wish I had more to say about it, but I need to watch it again, at least. I will say this: It's beautiful and a great film. And it's sad. Beyond that? More watches are needed.

Watched my copy of Certain Women this morning and there was only a single frame but of the screen blink and you’ll miss it glitch. Not a big deal at all. Don’t see Criterion ever fixing it as 99.9999999% of people won’t even see it.

Oh and the movie is just as sublimely beautiful as the first time I saw it. The third segment is a masterpiece of filmmaking.

Just finished Muriel, or The Time of Return, what a beautiful masterpiece by Alain Resnais! Memories bound us, control us, yet memories are confusing, piece by piece they affecting and changing the time and space around us. Muriel captured the complex connections between memories and lives so well.

Grabbed Fire Walk with Me & Rumble Fish last night. Couldn't decide between that or Stalker. Rumble Fish wasn't even on my radar till i heard Marc Marons podcast with Sophia Coppolla where she talks about Rumble Fish being her favorite film by her dad growing up. Is it anything like The Outsiders?

Much, much different film than The Outsiders with a little bit of similarities. Rumble Fish is dark, artsy, abstract and edgier. Both great films IMO. I wasn't nuts about Rumble Fish on my first viewing years ago but it has grown on me and Criterion's blu ray is phenomenal. If you find you didn't care for it much on your first viewing give it a couple more viewings.

Now that Criterion has released Festival, I wonder if there is any chance they might release Jazz On A Summers Day- shot at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival. It's in color so I imagine it would look delicious in high definition. That would be beyond cool.

That would be great. I'd be equally excited by a Criterion release of THE WEAVERS: WASN'T THAT A TIME? That film is not available on disc, other than a long OOP DVD that was released as a very expensive PBS Pledge item.

The Outsiders plays like a colorful, larger-than-life Hollywood teen melodrama (Coppola's style for it was inspired by Gone With The Wind by his own admission) and Rumble Fish is like a darker, more experimental art film (with visuals more akin to German expressionism). I much prefer Rumble Fish as it's a more challenging and deeper film; it's also a more personal project for Coppola (definitely give a listen to the commentary). I have a nostalgic affection for The Outsiders but was always put off by the exaggerated emotional tone. That being said, I recently found the new cut with 50's songs largely replacing the Carmine Coppola score in the Walmart $7.88 bin (an offer I couldn't refuse ) and had a better response to it.

So like, I'm not paying $100 or better for Pierrot Le Fou. How's the Studio Canal release? Anybody?

It is excellent. The colors in some scenes are pretty drastically different than the Criterion, and Criterion's is cinematographer approved while Studio Canal's is not. But if you've never seen Criterion's, you'll never know that the colors are "wrong", and the transfer and encode are beautiful. If you don't want to spend a fortune, I think the Studio Canal release is more than sufficient.

It's solid, definitely pick it up. It comes in a really weird digibook, where the disc is difficult to remove, but other than that, it's more than adequate.
