I just need Le Samourai, even though it's permanently on Filmstruck and I bought it on VUDU early last year(on my sub account by accident no less)

Interesting. Thanks for the link. I wonder the hold-up has been? Hopefully it is just something like fitting it into the schedule, or the like. Also that thread reminded me that I really need to find a way to see Beyond the Hills. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Beyond the Hill is amazing, one of my films of the decade. But it's possibly more disturbing than 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days...

[Show spoiler]That tells you all you need to know about how serious it is.

It's a great looking movie with awesome color design but I prefer Branded to Kill.

Also, Jo Shishido is a MUCH better actor than Tetsuya "Deer in headlights" Watari.

B&N shipped my four separately. The last two arrived today- The Philadelphia Story and Barry Lyndon. I just unwrapped them and perused the booklets and packaging. Compared to opening a barebones Amaray- there's no comparison. Excited now to watch each movie.

I once had three sale orders of five items each which came in thirteen different packages. Thank god none of them got picked up by customs, or it would have cost me about £150

Picked up by customs in what sense? Do you pay for mere inspections over there or are you importing drugs from B&N?

Still no sign of the other 12 shipping.

UK customs fees and VAT - plus Royal Mail "handling" fees for collecting them - kick in at a ludicrously low amount. If my experience sending parcels back to my family in the UK is anything to go by, you likely benefited from the fact that your order was broken down into so many separate shipments.

Royal Mail "handling" fee of £8 per package; and currently the $19.99 for a single Criterion is over the £15 customs threshold for the UK, so if I got hit 13 times it would be 13 x £8 plus 20% VAT on all titles including shipping cost (about £66). So £170 in total

Edit: Although, iirc on the occasion this happened, twenty bucks might have been below the threshold, so only two parcels might have been eligible for attention from Dick Turpin, if there were no box sets involved.

The only dealings I've ever had with customs is packages arriving with a little note saying 'we opened this, found nothing interesting, have a nice day'.

Check out Akira Kurosawa adaptations. Throne of Blood is Macbeth, Ran is King Lear. And The Bad Sleep Well is Hamlet, although it's less obvious than others and not released on Blu-ray yet. The one I love most is Throne of Blood. Criterion Blu-ray includes two different English subtitles and if you want more "normal" English, choose Donald Richie translation.

As for some "Shakespearean" (the term I don't want to overuse) movies, Anthony Mann used King Lear motif repeatedly in his westerns: The Furies, The Man from Laramie and Man of the West. And I've always thought Jules Dassin's British film noir Night and the City is particularly Shakespearean, especially Francis L. Sullivan's character.

Good lord. £15?. Really? That's way more aggressive than I remember. My relatives were stung a few times for parcels I sent (nothing of any significant value), which is why I stopped two or three years ago. Maybe the threshold changed?

Yes, back in the 2000s the threshold was £18. Word was that HMRC wanted it increased to £50 because collecting anything below that was not cost effective... so they reduced it to £15. My personal theory is that the new rate was communicated verbally and misheard

Yeah, the UK customs are a bit crazy with their imports limit... It used to be £18 a few years ago.

But the government reduced it to counter the tax loopholes that were exploited by many firms based in the Channel Islands.

That of course drove up the costs; coupled with the depreciating pound.

If you were ever to ship items to your relatives, may I suggest marking them as 'Gifts' ... since those have a higher limit of £39.

Thanks. The parcels were always gifts (Christmas and birthday), and marked as such. But it didn't seem to matter. There also seemed to be rules around multiple items/addressees; for example, a single parcel containing separately declared items for my niece and nephew - each below the threshold - would be be combined, and taxes/fees assessed. Basically, a bureaucracy doing what it does best...

Can anyone tell me if on the new VAMPYR Blu-ray that both the original German titled print, and Criterion's re-titled-in-English option are the same quality HD transfer?

I've enjoyed Criterion's recreation English of texts more than reading text over text in the unaltered German print in the DVD set.

Gosh, what is with these tax folks! That sucks for them.

The last thing you'd expect is someone paying duties for their gifts.

I too have sent packages to relatives there, around thrice maybe and no issues so far.

Opt for First Class Mail, since Priority or Express are far more likely to be throughly assessed for valuation.

Perhaps someday the NAFTA agreement with the UK might make things better.
