These will be in my Criterion tote bag. Sorry I chose 6.

As with most blind buys, You need to assess replay value.

Say a film like Stalker, which is no doubt massively brilliant but also equally taxing on your mind.

IMO, these films are great in a way that seem less demanding of your patience and you'll likely to be rewatching them.

I bought the WrestleMania Anthology box set off eBay once, and it arrived sans the outer box. The seller claimed customs must have gone into the package, removed the outer box, and shipped everything else to me.

He was undeterred when I pointed out the box he shipped it in was too small for the box to have ever been in the package, that there was no customs note, and that customs doesn't do that...and threatened to file charges for blackmail when I mentioned filing a dispute with PayPal (who offered to refund me in full if I shipped it back at my own expense, which would've made me even worse off than I already was).

I decided to finally try a film from Yasujirō Ozu. I ordered LATE SPRING, since the synopsis intrigued me. I doubt I'll ever pick up every film from him, but would anyone care to recommend their favorite Ozu film?

If any of you have not yet purchased the Criterion Blu-ray of Fritz Lang's Ministry of Fear, then this sale is a perfect chance for you to do so.

I second this. Ministry of Fear is pure suspense and atmosphere. Can I call it a noir? I like too and I do.

I've only just seen the Noriko trilogy, Late Spring, Tokyo Story and Early Summer, all starring the wonderful Setsuko Hara as three similar but different characters named Noriko. Tokyo Story is on some critics list as the best film of all time. All three films are great, but I think my personal favorite of the three is probably Late Spring because I enjoyed the relationship between the father and the daughter.

Enjoy!

Late Spring is my favorite film of all time, so good choice there. Tokyo-ga is the supplement on the disc and well worth watching. If you like it, Tokyo Story is the logical next step. Most consider it his best film and it has a pretty robust supplemental package.

To experience Ozu for the first time, so lucky

Not on Blu-ray, but I would highly recommend the Late Ozu Eclipse set (ironically the second Eclipse set I recommended today). It has some incredible films in it, and ones I find myself revisiting more-so than others. Also on DVD is the Floating Weeds double-feature set, The 1959 version is my fav. Ozu film, and 2nd fav. film of all time.

On BD, you really can't go wrong with any of the ones available.

Thanks! I do like taxing films that require thinking though but I've heard Stalker is a bit much. I'd likely watch it first before buying.

Right.

In that case, may I present to you the crème de la crème...

Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles ... or as I call it Watching Paint Dry at Jeanne's.

Jokes aside, my personal recommendation would be one of this year's best Criterion releases:

Being There is a sweet but thoughtful film on life and human behavior. It's also one that I'll be picking up soon.

Does anyone know how to find a list, or a practical way of searching for, all of the Criterion releases that include an entire feature film as a special feature? Releases like "Certified Copy," which includes Kiarostami's earlier "The Report," and "King of the Hill," which includes "The Underneath." This is my favorite type of special feature and helps me decide which Criterions are must-owns, but I've only ever found them just by random stumbling.

The Lodger also Hitchcock's Downhill.
The Lady Vanishes also has Crook's Tour which features two of the main characters from The Lady Vanishes.. not sure if it is a role reprise.
His Girl Friday has an extra film, The Front Page.
The Big City has The Coward.

I'm sure if there are others, people will chime in here in a minute or so.

Of those 4, I've only had a chance to see The Coward and it was fantastic.

I tried to buy that set twice from B&N and kept getting really beat up slip boxes, so I returned it.

The Seventh Seal (Bergman Island which has its own spine #)
Late Spring (Tokyo-ga)
The Gold Rush (1925 version of the film is included)
Persona (Liv and Ingmar)
