Think of Elliot Gould in RPM. After years and years of university, he's presenting his oral defense of his doctoral thesis. He is confronted with his total refusal to acknowledge the homophobic subtext contained in his dissertation. The obvious result being a glaring reflection of his own psychological makeup. Unable to assimilate this revelation and understanding he will not be accepted into this group of peers, he has a mental break which assures his unsuitability.

After years of wandering the depths of bipolar behavior, Mr. Jackson has finally had a breakthrough. He's not an 18th century man, he's a highly educated man who's finally come to terms with his life and place in the world.

Mr. Jackson is once again whole. Ray Jackson is engaged and and at the top of the hierarchical pyramid. He's showing a concern for the highest psychological and emotional needs. He is reborn as himself, highly educated, astute, and now a fully engaged 21st century man.

I also watched Le Samourai this morning, after not having seen it for nearly a decade. I barely remembered much going in, aside from the coolness of Deloin and the textures. It was way better than I remembered, so much so that I questioned how I could ever think this wasn't Melville's best. His camera captures so much detail that the viewer needs to pick up, both for Delon's intellectual and emotional state. Just incredibly assured and thought out camerawork from the first frame to the last. I'm especially partial of the scene where he goes to pick up his money (the dolly after the interaction.)

It's the kind of minimalism where the imitators (Refn, Corbijn) don't even come close to matching. Melville's camera with Deloin's pitch perfect performance is simply unmatched.

Ray Jackson.

Could he really be Willem Dafoe?

Only the mysterious Ray Jackson knows the truth.

P.S. I quite enjoyed his performance in Murder on the Orient Express by the way. Did you too?

I'll take The American over Le Samorai (by a few hairs). That said, I do really love the Melville film and it saddens me to see everyone enjoying their copies while I find myself watching Alain Delon in Serpico.

To continue the trend, I'll probably end up eating a turkey sandwich from Subway on Thanksgiving.

Part of me wouldn't mind that. Beats having to spend hours cooking a large (and largely) flavorless bird.

Luckily I never have to cook the turkey or have thanksgiving a my house. Otherwise I'd probably agree.

I suspect a call was placed to a certain vacuum cleaner repair man in New Mexico late one evening. A new start was promised but with a steep price. After some deliberation Ray decided an avatar change was cheaper and he'd get to keep his credit card reward points.

I would prefer it if you used the word penis.

It's less boorish.

Cheerio.

I may revisit it at one point, but it really left a bad impression, and a post-Le Samourai discussion in a class a year or so ago (I was absent during the screening) didn't inspire any confidence to think I was wrong. Neither has his subsequent work, if I'm being honest.

This could be true. I bet there are a lot of celebrities, movie stars/film buffs in these threads. You can kind of spot them. They are the ones defending the really crappy movies they produced, directed or starred in. JenniferLawrenceFan claims to be a dude. I've know for a long time that it's really Jennifer Lawrence.
Back to the topic: it seems like Criterion has a great relationship with Peter Bogdonovich, so why the hell don't they release more of his movies? The UK Paper Moon has the same extras as my DVD so I am not going to import it. I will wait, but man, that seems like a perfect film for Criterion.

I'd love to have "Targets" on BD, but unfortunately it's back with Paramount, who have basically stopped licensing their catalog out and don't release hardly anything themselves anymore.

It's his lone great film, but Control and A Most Wanted Man are pretty nice.

The fact that The American starred one of the biggest actors of its day and that it was working from a recognizable blueprint made it a walking target. There are certain styles of movies cinephiles are extra prickly about every time they are resuscitated and the stripped down lone assassin movie is one of them.

Maybe that doesn't apply to you, but sometimes I get caught up in the ______ got here first game and hence slowly check out of a film. I have a feeling that's what happened back when The American was released.

No, he couldn't. I would know, as Willem and I have been mates since 2008 when I passed him on the street in NYC during a trip there. As we drew parallel, he glanced at me and gave me a nod, which I duly returned. No words were spoken, but I like to think we connected on a more meaningful level. Haven't seen him since, but what's a decade between close friends? Same thing happened to me with Joan Collins, on a flight from Nice to London...

Gentleman please, I think can speak for most of the fine people on this thread when I urge you to confine your remarks to Criterion-related subject matters.

With that in mind, am I the only one who thinks that Body of Evidence is long overdue for the Criterion treatment? Despite the critical backlash, this psychosexual masterpiece was a groundbreaking moment in the development of 90s arthouse cinema.

Only beer-guzzling cretins such as the late Roger Ebert thought otherwise.

So I got my Blu-ray copy of Jabberwocky earlier than expected.

Wow! this 4K transfer's truly amazing, perhaps I would even say the best restoration done of a film in the past decade or so.

However, unfortunately Criterion did it again... No freakin' booklet! just a long arse fold-out.

... ...

As for RJ, I must say the world's still coming to terms with the loss of Ray's diabolical side. #grief

I'm not quite sure if hopes and prayers or pardoning the turkey would help. But we must not loose hope.

Jolly Ray, buddy ol' pal... If you're out there... maybe this might trigger your memory.
