That's a great pick. Maybe include the silent version, as well. The Body Snatcher, since they're doing Lewton, would be my candidate. All the discussion of Le Samourai makes me want This Gun For Hire from someone.

I agree.

I'm looking forward to seeing it again and hopeful that I'll see in it what everyone else does, but for now, my opinion is that it is extremely over-loved. Leon Morin, Priest, Army of Shadows and Le Deuxieme Souffle are all better. I haven't seen Bob le Flambeur, so that might be, too.

I also agree that anyone who sleeps on The American might be approaching it with all its predecessors in mind..... as some kind of barometer. Great film.

Hi, can anyone tell me, when you watch the Before Trilogy whether subtitles come up for the French and German bits of dialogue or are they not meant to be subtitled?
Thanks in advance

There's a great Pre-Code: Five Star Final-that has Karloff in a memorable supporting role. It would be a perfect companion to Ace in the Hole. It was a First National film so it's with Warner but man it's a hard hitter and Edward G. Robinson is fantastic.

I'd probably put Bob Le Flambour up there as Mellville's best. It's his most taut and enjoyable film. It also has the strongest lead in his oeuvre. Roger Duchesne is awesome.

Am I the only one that runs hot but mostly cold on Delon? For example, my only knock on Rocco and His Brothers is that he's very unconvincing as a boxer. And on the other end of the spectrum, I love him as the weasely Tom Ripley in Purple Noon.

Tsk tsk tsk...

Dafoe or bust.

ps. When I met and talked to Jim Jarmusch a few weeks ago in person, he told me firsthand that his favorite scene in Fishing With John was the Willem Dafoe scene. THERE! I just mentioned 2 films in the Criterion Collection AND they both have something to do with Willem Dafoe!

pps. Unlike you Ray, I didn't designate that photo as a spoiler. (Maybe cause I grew up spoiled)

Which is a shame as Targets is a great film and it's subject matter is still relevant today.

He already has a place in the Criterion Collection. Criterion released The Haunted Strangler and Corridors of Blood.

Also Karloff is seen briefly in The Spirit of the Beehive when images from Frankenstein are shown as the children are watching the film. He definitely deserves a bigger spot in the collection though.

Speaking of Karloff on Criterion, The Black Cat (w/Bela Lugosi) would be smashing.

One of the best and most diabolical horror films of its era, which has only ever been available in the 5-film film Lugosi set.

The original Scarface would be cool too, even if frankly I'm happy with the 2 DVD copies I own.

Finally got to my long awaited copy of Le Sam. yesterday. A nice upgrade from the dvd, wouldn't say night and day, like others did, but a worthy purchase. Too bad the extras were not redone or some new ones added for that matter. Some of the night scenes are a bit more noisier than they should be, but that is because they used the same dvd master I guess. Frankly, I think Criterion knew many were asking for this and this would sell over the buzz. I also think they knew a brand new, un-DNR'd to death master was not coming anytime soon, so they did what they could to get an upgrade out. Hopefully this great classic will get a complete CORRECT makeover and have some new extras added some time soon by someone. For now, this will do.

Jon Mulvaney emailed me today that The Silence of the Lambs will include the teaser trailer and Hopkins' voice message, but not the TV spots.

The Breakfast Club will also include a trailer.

Well they did license Election to Criterion recently, so...

I'm someone who really hates singing in movies, whether it be musicals or just someone performing on stage or something of the like. I was looking into blind buying Nashville but I noticed this when scrolling through the IMDB page.

IMDB also lists "Music" as one of the main genres for the film. How much singing is in Nashville and is it a solid blind buy?

Proceed with caution. It is a movie about a bunch of characters who are singers coming together in Nashville for a concert. It's not a musical where characters suddenly burst into song in an unmotivated and potentially non-diegetic way, but there's certainly a lot of singing all through it.

To add my two cents, the movie is chock full, from beginning to end, of characters performing songs on stage or in the recording booth, and one extended scene is set at the Grand Ole Opry with about 3 or 4 songs in a row. Some of the songs are deliberately hokey or satirical. The film won the Oscar for Best Song for Keith Carradine's on-screen performance of I'm Easy.

So, if you are put off by that sort of thing, this might not be your cup of tea. However, it's a very quirky and entertaining movie, so if you are able to look past your normal dislike of musical performances, you might still enjoy it.

And to add my 2 cents, Nashville is not the kind of movie where everything stops while people sing. In true Altman fashion, there's always multiple things going on at once, where the story is being advanced while people are singing. Sometimes the singing is in the background, sometimes it's in the foreground, but there is always something else going on around it.

I got my first two Criterions today. Went with Godzilla and Don't Look Now. I'm also interested in picking up Rosemary's Baby, Eyes Without a Face and Diabolique sometime down the line.

Powell/Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death just underwent a 4K restoration by Sony.

I wonder if this means Criterion will release the film in the future given their relationship with Sony.
