You guys make it really hard to choose sometimes.
His Girl Friday is the much better overall movie. Cary Grant in top form, plus it's Howard Hawks.

Philadelphia Story has one of Jimmy Stewart's best performances, but it's the weaker movie.

[Show spoiler]I'm not willing to pay the money to buy the OOP Criterion release, so I've been looking to get a Studio Canal release that is part of a promo on Amazon Germany. According to some pretty old reviews on this site, a British Studio Canal release was apparently better than the Criterion. Is this accurate? I'm assuming all other Studio Canal releases would still be using this same master?

Are there any other issues with the Studio Canal release(s) that I should avoid?

Is there any chance that the Criterion release will be back into print at some point soon (or ever)?

I appreciate everyone's help in advance. I will probably be making my purchase on Sunday
.
All the SC versions across Europe of the blu-ray would be the same. In fact the actual disc would also be identical across regions, since they offer a language option before the menu loads up. The SC version is fine in itself, it's not really better or worse than the Criterion. It is not identical either, being *slightly* zoomed in and having a cooler color palette (again, one can't say who's more correct here). One issue would be if your TV/player cannot play PAL video because most of the extras on the SC release are in SD PAL format.

Never say never, but it's unlikely that the Criterion release will be back in print because SC has a blanket license with Lionsgate in the US, one that fans will complain has been tragically underused in terms of number of titles released.

Well once again my attempt at soliciting advice from you people has ended in what I can only describe as a complete and odiously internecine split down the proverbial middle.

About half of you ne'er-do-wells assert, quite fervently, that The Philadelphia Story is the superior film by a wide margin. While the other half counter with the exact opposite assessment--utterly devoid of anything that resembles hesitation or self-doubt.

And thus I am left with no other viable alternative but to make a decision on my own.

Thanks a lot.

I must return to my center.

I am fairly sure Criteiron admitted back when the DVD was released that their color palette was incorrect, and their blu uses the same master. Plus SC's colour scheme also fits the other Melville films from the period including Army of Shadows and Un Flic.

It would be really nice if Criterion stole a move from their own playbook and released John Sayles 5 Films.

Well, now I'll assert something and quite fervently...

Any cinephile of your age that hasn't seen either The Philadelphia Story or His Girl Friday has most certainly been living the life of a ne'er-do-well!

Hang your head in shame, sir!

All of the 30's and 40's screwball comedies featuring the comedic stylings of Archibald Alexander Leach are worth your time Ray Jackson (and indeed, inclusion in your film collection).

All that being said, I've always been partial to The Awful Truth myself, which Criterion will angle the rights to if they're smart...

This is a tough one. His Girl Friday is a comedy classic, but on the other hand I've always found the antics of sterotypical giggling Japanese schoolgirls to be well-nigh irresistible...especially in a haunted house.

Disappointing if true, but it still doesn't stop Le Cercle Rouge from being one of my favorite Criterion releases.

Just what is he talking about with HOUSE? I assumed it's the recent Will Ferrell movie.

Aaah, I see AL The Strange has already cleared this up...and of course, neither the 2017 The House nor the 1977 House should ever be confused with the 1986 House starring the irrepressible William Katt!

I decided to start The Marseille Trilogy last night, thinking I would watch one film consecutively over the next three nights. Boy was I wrong. I couldnt stop. I ended up watching all three films in a row. Didnt get to bed until 4:30am but it was so worth it. What a delightful throughly enjoyable set of films. I hope to see more from Pagnol in the very very near future.

Tonight I will watch the special features.

If you are on the fence with this box set do not hesitate especially during the B&N sale.

Well, I think the Japanese HOUSE movie is much more up Ugly Avatar Guy's alley. He laughs at Bela Lugosi.

Frankly, HIS GIRL FRIDAY would be too sophisticated for such a silly man.

I check in on the John Sayles blog once in a while, to check on the status of "Amigo" and "City of Hope". "Amigo" finally did get a DVD release via his site, but according to them, "City of Hope" has some kind of rights issue holding up a physical release. Whatever the issue is doesn't stop them from distributing a digital copy on Amazon. They weren't specific, because usually you can't talk about those things while the legal fight is going on, but the impression I got was that it was unlikely to get a release any time soon; I don't want to say never, because it does sound as if they are still trying to resolve it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets a release.
